well 1: i can honestly sya i do have veggie seeds starting in trays right now, lots of happy little shoots...BUT they will be going into raised SQFT beds with hoop set ups over them once their big enough untill frost danger has past, because every year we wait untill may and every year we only get about 1/2 the production we should be seeing especially off our tomatoes and peppers...so this year i did a major early start, were building raised beds and doign the squarfoot method and we'll see if we cant get a longer season out of it.
and since ive got crocus and Lilly of the vally shoots starting to emerge and my honeysuckle buds are swelling, im ok taking the risk as i can always start a couple new trays in april if we loose any of these shoots.

2: there is still some snow on the ground here in bethel...compaered to what was on the ground yesterday theres a dramatic difference (and all the small local streams are SWELLING!) but we do still have a couple inches here and there of grey yucky once was snow lol.
i can however say the difference between snow on the ground in bristol (up there yesterday) and here at our house in bethel is AMAZING...bristol looked like winter in full swing, yet bethel looks like spring is realy thinking about comming soon.

3: major flood concerns around here, all the local smal streams and "rivers" as well as some swamp land are already bulging and the rains in for the day and theres still more snow to melt too. be carefull in flood zones folks!

Yeap.. I know exactly what you mean by "half the production" because of the short growing season up here and the urge to get a jump start. The only problem with starting early is the inability to transplant 10 week old plants outside..unless you do what you are doing this year... I might have to build a greenhouse for this year as I believe our usually "safe" transplant date of mothers Day will be extended further out to 3rd week of May not 2nd..

Current radar shows the 20s behind this front about to pass us within 20hrs.

This house didn't *come* with a swimming pool in the backyard, but I seem to have one now anyway. No, scratch that. It's not a swimming pool. It's a lake. Several of them, in fact. Another day of rain and I'll have an ocean in my backyard. Feh.

One trick that has worked for me over the years is small styrofoam boxes over seedlings when they come up in early spring at a late frost threatens: In my location along the southeast CT coast, I can usually plant the small tomato seedlings out by late April. If there is a late season frost, I cover them with a styrofoam cooler box, it seems to have worked really well. This might work with small shoots for veggies, of course if you have a lot of ground to cover this might not work.

Interesting...I see Albany has been upgraded from advisory to warning now, for 5-9" snow! I guess we were quite close on this storm.

I'm baffled with this 1 storm.. There are Tornado watches in NC right now, blizzard conditions in PA and NY, Heavy Rain and flooding in CT and MA Sleet in other areas... This storm has it all!! Its nuts.. Central PA has half foot of snow. Northern NJ will get some snow... Its strange seeing the pictures coming from PA and Syracuse with whiteout conditions in March..The rain/snow line is a couple hundred miles from us. The cold front approaching slowly.

We do all this over again on the 11th and 15th and maybe the sinature storm on the 19th during SuperFullMoon!
