He was called stupid and got elected twice. He's white. He can get away with it.
Public speakers are often commented about how articulate or not they are. I attend a dozen or so speaker series a year, have done so for years, and there are always comments about how articulate or not the speaker was, and even some feedback forms ask to grade the speaker's articulation. This is not even close to being a "black only" thing.
In any case, if people are "surprised" because I black speaker is articulate, perhaps it should be addressed as to why an articulate black would stand out, rather than addressing the person who is surprised about it.
OBAMA ACTUALLY IS ARTICULATE. HE IS A GREAT SPEAKER. This has nothing to do with race. I don't have to be black to see or say anything on this subject. It's a simple observation. Plenty of other politicians or public figures have been and are called articulate regardless of race. It's a characteristic some people have. Public speaking is not easy and some are better at it than others. They can speak clearly, be convincing, and seem confident.
Think of it this way. Why would those who don't support him say this? They dislike him either way. Most probably won't admit he's a good speaker. It's his supporters who most admit how great of a speaker he is. He is good at giving speeches. Why would those who have supported him been racist at all in their thinking and ACTUALLY mean - "hey - for a black guy, he's eloquent!" No. People say he's a good speaker because he is. It's as simple as that.
"He's white. He can get away with it." - I don't want to deal with that type of petulant ignorance.
Of course, that's what white privilege is all about!
