Someone was here first, and it certainly wasn't the European settlers. And I'm pretty sure they took issue with the European settlers stealing their land. Just because there wasn't a law written onto a scroll by white people with quilled pens doesn't mean it was "legal".
First didn't mean squat hundreds of years ago. It was a wide open frontier for anyone's taking. There is even some evidence that it was actually a white group that got here first. But it doesn't matter, period. Get your head out of the past. It's done and all over with and those people are all dead now. Anyone born here from citizen parents has every right to be in this country today. We have immigration laws, an established border and a government which is recognized internationally. Go spit on some white European's grave if it will make you feel better. You weren't alive back then anyway so what's it to you?
Optimus, I'm also in south Florida and I have to ad that your situation is exceptional. Most jobs in Miami will not consider you as a serious candidate unless you speak Spanish or Creole (depending on where in Miami). Heck, some of them won't even consider hiring you if you're not Hispanic. I've heard of that happening a lot, too. Most of the white people who used to live in Miami are long gone. And many of the blacks who used to live there have moved to Broward.
I agree with you that its good to have bilingual skills, but most other Americans feel that people who immigrate to America should embrace American culture rather than try to efface it with their own.---which sorta makes sense. Why bother to move here to live if you love your country, culture, and language so much?
Learning Spanish isn't totally useless since there are more Spanish speakers in the US than Spain, as the article in the OP pointed out. You can use it to... talk to people, and stuff.
But Hispanic-Americans and most legal immigrants know how to speak English so why would we have to learn Spanish to communicate with them? We also have a large Asian community. Should we learn their languages also? Are Hispanics willing to do that? Of course not! It is only white Americans that are expected to. How about blacks? Do you think they want to learn Spanish or Chinese? Of course not. This is an English speaking country and the majority of Americans speak English. The minority whose native languages aren't English should be learning English not the other way around.
So what? Hispanics of all types are now 55 million in the U.S, and count people who know Spanish as a language, and I am not in the bit surprised.

No one outside of the Haitian community speaks Creole. And most Latinos in South Florida aren't native Spanish speakers, so they wouldn't get hired either based on your claims.

That is absolutely not true. What YOU are saying is nonsense. If you apply for a job in the North Miami area, employes will ask if you know how to speak Creole because of the very large Haitian population that lives there. Also, with few exceptions, every place else in Miami is mostly Cuban with sprinklings of Latinos from other cultures. Most parts of Miami is overwhelmingly Spanish-speaking. Many of the people who live in Miami are bilingual but most of them communicate with each other in Spanish. In some cases, some will respond respond to you in English if you speak to them in English, and some will just stare at you because they don't speak any English and have no idea what you're saying. There are even entire areas in Miami where no one speaks any English at all. Totally ridiculous to deny this. Anyone who has visited and stayed in Miami for even a little while knows that this is so. Why bother taking my word for it, even. Anyone who really wants to see this in evidence can simply go to one of the big job boards like indeed and take a look at the listings there for employment in Miami. Almost all of them are looking for people who are bilingual to fill the positions.
Of course English has commonalities with other languages. It is a Germanic language, related to (obviously) German, Dutch, Danish, Swedish, and Norwegian. Due to the Roman Empire and Norman invasions it's also heavily Latinized.
As far as logic and the brains of English-speakers not able to grasp consistency and structure, this is quite ridiculous. Funny how Britain and its off-shoots (the U.S., Canada, Australia, New Zealand) have created more successful societies than Spanish-speaking Latin America.

You're absolutely correct. Hispanics for the most part will always choose Spanish over English even when they know how to speak it. There are those from south of our border that have been here for decades that have never learned English either. As more and more of them pour over our borders illegally this will be even a bigger trend in the future.
And we are supposed to learn Spanish to accommodate them?
