what you guys fail to understand is that according to islam, it is "god's will" and if the kid drowns, then god wants the kid dead. to follow the course of action of an infidel, this is what i will be doing as a devout muslim: disrespect god by thinking he won't do sht and on top of that allow a man to touch my daughter. Most of the other online reports say the father was Asian. Some refer to him as an expat.
There is a substantial immigrant population ( far greater than the native population) in this city/ country from all over Asia and parts of Africa. I would not automatically assume dad was Muslim. Way too many religious sects view women as property.
It seems reasonable to assume dad was not a swimmer. Not clear how he could have prevented multiple rescuers from saving his daughter. Perhaps the rescuers were his sons.
We'll never know how the local courts resolve this tragedy, assuming it even occurred.
This is coming from a region/religion where women are killed for being raped because their honor has been destroyed. I am not surprised at this story in the slightest.
However in Yemen some of those Muslim fathers have no qualms about handing over their eight year old daughters as child brides and when the children run away back to their parents they are told you are married you must perform your duties as a wife don't bring disgrace upon the family. There has been documented cases of girls as young as 8 dieing from internal injuries related to being raped from their so called husbands on their wedding night, some of these children have even reported being held down by their so called husbands mothers while being raped. It is all done in the name of Islam and the rationale used is that the religion doesn't specify an age limit for marriage. In Yemen there was an attempt to change to law raising the age of consent for marriage to 17 it was blocked by an organization called the muslim brotherhood.
Just sayin, this still doesn't seem like a bad idea for these people..........
Would "these people" be Muslims who let people die rather than be touched by strange men, Jehova's Witnesses who let people die rather than get life saving medical treatments, Catholics who let people die from ectopic pregnancies to avoid the sin of an abortion?
I'm sure there are other religious groups that have similar rules that can result in death when taken to the extreme. If this story is true, the father should be arrested and prosecuted as an individual for his actions as an individual. But every religious group has individuals that take things too far, that doesn't mean we should eliminate all followers of that religion. Even if everybody was athiest there would still be individuals who take things too far and cause harm.
I took the point of that post as geared towards a region that is currently the site of extremism and turmoil, and (from a Western perspective) very backwards thinking. It's not the first time I've heard someone suggest (jokingly or not) we bomb the hell out of the Middle East.

Lots of things lead to hate. 9/11 lead to hate. 9/11 is single-handedly the reason that so many Americans distrust and dislike Muslims/Middle Easterners, extremist or not, no matter how wrong it may be.
And "my" bomb? I'm not manufacturing or dropping bombs on anyone. It wasn't even my post.
