Most signifigant is probably training. Shooting in a static range has pretty little in common with a real life shooting. Probably need more IDPA and less traditional range time.

Tho hit rates are not always reflective of bad shooting, I am not convinced it is here.

They are indeed great weapons. Perhaps I pharased it wrong, they aren't for idiots, just to easily mismanaged by idiots. I hate the grip, and still don't see the sense of not putting any manual safety on a weapon. Even my XD has a grip safety.

NYPD Officers Fire 84 Shots At Suspect, Miss 83 Times
I just read the whole article. Prior to that I had just went off this thread about him being behind a car. Now all I can say is "hmmm, certainly gives one something to think about".

I meant a big component of police training at range only twice a year.

Yes … Again, target practice on a range is nothing close to real life "combat shooting" …
Paper targets don't dodge and hide and run away, and they don't shoot at you ...

Instead of the Huffpo version, let's read one which has more detail:

http://www.nytimes.com/2015/09/05/ny...klyn.html?_r=0

Quote:
The police shot a man in the leg in Brooklyn early on Friday after he opened fire on another man and then on the officers, striking an unmarked patrol car, the authorities said. Jerrol Harris had already shot another man.

---------------------snip-------------------------

Two plainclothes officers, who were from an anticrime unitin the 83rd Precinct, came upon a 52-year-old man who had been shot in the arm in Bushwick, just after 1 a.m., the police said. That man gave the officers a description of the person who shot him, and the officers chased the suspect in their car after seeing him run away.

Several blocks south of the first shooting, Mr. Harris confronted the officers, firing at them multiple times, the police said. Their patrol car was hit, shattering its front window, but the officers were not. Mr. Harris opened fire FIRST. How many of you armchair Columbos would have soiled yourselves? How many of you have been in the situation where someone fired upon you? How many of you have experienced adrenaline surges like these two plainclothes officers did?

The officers returned fire and started chasing Mr. Harris on foot, joined by several uniformed officers. One of the officers shot Mr. Harris once in the left calf. They found a .40-caliber Taurus Millenium handgun next to him, the police said. I'm sure all you naysayers are crack shots whilst running. Trained snipers, all of you.

Mr. Harris had previously been arrested about a dozen times on charges including robbery and weapons possession. Is he a misunderstood altar boy or a career criminal?

------------------snip------------------------

But …

His mom still loves him …
He is kind to young children and small animals …
He has a great singing voice in the shower in the morning ...

So …
Why didn't those horrible jack-booted thug cops just talk nice to him, maybe offer to buy him a coffee and a pastry, and try to find out why he was having such a bad day … ???

I completely agree, time and again we hear and see cops literally unloading the gun at the target..

What happened to controlled and careful gun use... sometimes I think the cops just like shooting so they can be a part of the gun fight..
