Actually I only occasionally text and usually only while waiting for the movie to start. Really, the light from a phone is distracting? If the movie is a decent one I'm usually so engrossed I don't notice what anyone else is doing! I think people expect a lot for their $12 ticket...it IS for a 2 hour movie after all - there's not a lot of entertainment that can be had for that price. And nope, I don't buy overpriced theater food - I go after a meal and can manage without eating for 2 hours.
There is something called respect for others that is lacking today . The way you don't buy food that is expensive in the theater and can manage for two hrs , think of others who paid that $ 12 ticket and maybe they really can't afford to go to the movies all the time . $12 may not be a lot to you it may be to someone else .
Why are you at the movies then? Are you so addicted to texting that you can't pause for two hours to look at something you spent money on or are you afraid that no one would think that you are special if you don't constantly text? Why not just stay at home and text to your hearts content?
Agree, and with the OP, that resistance is futile....
To the people who text: Instead of texting, just turn to the people behind you and shout, "**** you, *******". It is actually less disturbing than the light in your eyes from the texting and over much quicker.
To people who don't understand why people even go to movies theaters: The immersion of the big screen, great sound system, and lately, the excellent seating.
Generally speaking, I think theater audiences today are much better than 20 years ago. Many theater goers today are afficionados who enjoy the total experience and immersion, rather than the hoi polloi of years past. Thus respect for fellow theater goers is at an all-time high. Allowing texting would be a real step back. I remember back in the 80s when everyone's digital watch would 'beep' at 9pm during a gripping movie moment. :-)
I'm fairly certain this whole thing was a stunt to drum up some buzz about the company. AMC just acquired another theater chain, Carmike, and also have a new CEO. What better way to get some ink about the company than to stir folks up with the ONE THING that makes people nuts about going to a theater?
Poor public relations execution for sure but when you're in a dying business, desperate times call for desperate measures. Obviously the company subscribes to the "any press is good press as long as they spell the name right" school of thought.
Stand down folks, they were just yanking our chain.
Now if you'll excuse me, I need to run down to Blockbuster.... errr... the Redbox machine and check out a copy of "Ishtar"

I think this is very location-specific. I don't have access to new construction theaters with excellent seating and a premium sound system. I have 50" Panasonic plasma panels in my houses with an excellent 7:1 sound system. When the price drops, I'll ditch my 6 year old technology for 90" OLED panels and electronics that are designed for 4K. Other than to watch something in IMAX, I doubt I'd ever set foot in a theater again.
I go to many movies and have never been inconvenienced by people texting during the pre-show, i dont see how it would impact my movie going experience if some one was texting while the movie was playing as i cant hear them texting and i cant see their phones if they are held in their laps.
Now if they are actually making phone calls while the movie is playing thats a whole different story.
