Economically and for folks like me that enjoy it.

Let's talk about breeding and raising cows and pigs etc just to slaughter them to eat.

Humans are not necessarily nice in general. Banning horse racing accomplishes not much positively but that is just my opinion.

Kentucky derby up soon no?

Not about horses, but Oregon becomes the 42nd state to ban dog racing.

Sorry I disagree. The horse racing industry is too cruel to horses.

Default 7 horses die at track leading up to Kentucky Derby

"This is part of racing, and it’s the cruel part," Mike Repole, co-owner of Forte, said in an interview with FanDuel TV.

This is not new for the sport in North America.

Something is very wrong w/that form of entertainment.

A killing field? Come on PETA. You guys are quite something.

Lets call all the mass shooting places across the USA as "killing fields." Oh wait, the victims are all humans. Err

I'm sure more people die prematurely (killed, suicide, freak accidents, etc) in NYC on a given year than all horses that die in that year in the country. Killing field? Really?

In other words, just because they're horses and not human means this is OK.

Horse racing is as dangerous as any pinnacle sport that pushes the body to the max. It's dangerous for both horse and rider.

LOTS of study and ingenuity has gone into making it safer, and that effort will continue. Part of the challenge will always be the difficulty with healing broken bones on horses who have to stand and move to live. People are easier. Horse racing has funded more advanced research into equine sports medicine, surgical options, nutrition and physical therapy study than ever would have been ventured without it.... Every backyard pleasure horse and every veterinarian doing farm calls has benefited from the fruits of this research. And so have race horses.

But it will always be dangerous to compete in athletic endeavors! It's not for the faint of heart.

We should always keep a close eye on the people in horse racing. There will always be temptation to cheat. But there is also a lot of peer pressure to do right by them now. In the life of the race horse, and the retirement of them when they're done. We need to keep that up, and we can do that and support horse racing.... even if I would never have the courage to do it, I can celebrate and admire those who do... Because courage is also a virtue.

Yes, courage is a virtue, but part of the debate over horse racing appears to be whether the horses (as opposed to their riders) are in fact exhibiting:

a) true courage in competitive sport, which is what's left of the biological need to best rivals for a mate.
b) the result of coercion by their humans: if it was left up to the horse would it choose to push itself in races day in day out or would it prefer running at liberty in some owner's pasture.
c)the result of distorted hereditary compulsion: being bred to the point the horse has lost its sense of self-preservation/survival, which enables them to risk damage or death during competition. Not to mention being bred to be such specialists they're prone to traumatic physical injuries if the slightest thing goes wrong.

I don't know. I am not a trainer, an equine behavioralist or a vet. I do know I love horses; watching them and knowing/working with them. Winning a bet or money has never meant anything to me. An equine athlete is an incredibly beautiful sight but providing me with a beautiful vision isn't the only consideration. There's a cost. Ultimately, I am not the one paying it.

Except that the rider volunteers to take the dangerous risk, the horse does not.
In my view abusing any animal for sport/entertainment is immoral, ergo cannot connote virtue.

I think it would be appropo to play taps before each race instead of whatever the current jingle.

Back in the day a cousin of mine wanted to be a jockey when he grew up. It was when he was old enough to pursue his dream that he learned of all the corruption & what he viewed as unconscionable animal abuse. (ie; knowingly running a horse w/a hairline fracture.) He was reviled & changed course (in the 60's). Sadly, regardless of whatever boon to vet medicine the sacrificed horses may have provided to farm animals, this kind of entertainment has clearly degenerated even further.
