As if the drive time of about an hour each way wasn't bad enough, that commute is really only possible using the PGB toll road, which will cost about $200 a month. That's just adding insult to injury IMHO.

That is a killer drive. Easily a one to two hour drive one way depending on route from point A to point B. Traffic, Gas, Construction, weather. Much better things to do than be stuck on the road
in traffic. Why Richardson, similar neighborhoods and amenities can be found nearby Westlake.

Colleagues of mine were making the opposite commute from Tarrant County. They moved as quickly as possible closer to work in Richardson in order not to have to be on the road so much.

There are lots of communities close to Westlake.

That commute would be fine for a few weeks, but the ultimate goal would be to do a short one...

Default Where to live based on commute/schools etc

Hello all, I am considering a position in Grapevine Texas. What would be a good place to live within 20-25 minutes commuting distance (toll roads are okay) in a good school district. We will initially be renting a 3br house (budget 1500/month) and maybe in a year's time would want to buy our budget would be about 250K.

Appreciate your advice.
Thanks,
Namrata

Grapevine has a good school district and is an excellent place to live too.
The City of Grapevine is close to everything as well. You name it, its possibly
in your own backyard. Other locations nearby are Southlake ($), Colleyville ($$), Hurst, Euless, Bedford, Keller, Trophy club, Roanoke, Westlake, Flower Mound. Only to name a few, Good Luck to you.

Southlake is as much or more expensive than Colleyville
and you won't find anything to rent or buy in either town in your price point--
older homes are sold for 250K for lot value

your price point is going to be iffy in Grapevine maybe--
reasonably priced homes there in nicer areas are very desireable but you have time to check the market
you might also consider Hurst, Bedford, north Euless
HEB ISD, Birdville ISD, Keller ISD (east side in NRHills) are good districts and probably more in line with your price point--look north of Airport Fry and as close to Precinct Line Road going west--it goes all the way north form 183 to 1709/Southlake Blvd
but I think you will find that 1500 for a house is not much
a 3/2 apt you could probably get
check realtor.com--
can't post/link to other MLS sites on this site

Thank you all for your answers. It seems to be the consensus that it is not a good idea... The main reason are trying to avoid the Westlake area is for all the fracking going on. I know we may not have a definitive answer on whether it is harmful of safe, but we'd rather avoid it just to be safe, and also for potential damage to property value if it turns out to be bad.
Thanks again!

you don't even mention what you can spend
do you even know what it costs to buy a house in Westlake?
1 million minimum
and no apartments
Colleyville--no apartments
Southlake--no drilling and no apartments

you should read some of the threads about FRACKING on the Dallas and FTW forums
educate yourself

Good grief. We've been fracking wells in Texas since the early 1940s.

ETA - I think we are more or less doomed as a society when a news outlets and dishonest evangelical environmentalists pump the airwaves with absurd distortions.

"all the fracking going on"--

just so totally out of touch with the reality of the situation--
like so many people on so many different issues today

and getting no true education about any of them...
