Also, weight gain can be due to other factors. I was around 140 which was super unusual for me (within healthy weight, but not my comfort level). My thyroid was slow, so I thought the med would help, but not much.
I stopped taking my Lyrica. During a 6 month period of no exercise (active, but not specific workouts), and on vacation, so eating lots of stuff I normally wouldn't.
Dropped 10 lbs.
So now back to exercise and our regular mainly vegetarian diet, and the weight is dropping again.
So there can be other factors, though usually it is calories in, calories out.
I totally agree with apps like fitness pal, they give you great data on what you are putting in your body and it can be surprising.

No, it's always calories in, calories out. There can be factors that influence that obviously. Exercise and activity level, age, stress, lack of sleep, medicine, injury or illness, temperature and humidity... there's a myriad of factors that affect calories out. It's still a simple as calories in, calories out though.
I think everyone has to find what works for them. For me - carbs are the enemy. I feel SO much better when I cut out bread, rice, pasta, sweets, etc. I have more energy and can keep the weight off if I stick with low carb.
I prefer eating a low carb healthy fat plan as it, to me, preferable to having diabetes, losing my eyesight or having my limbs removed. My brother passed this year due to complications of diabetes, and that sold me.

Yes, but I think my point was understood.
Me:
1500 cal, level 10 exercise = weight gain
1700 cal, no exercise = weight loss
(those are rough examples)
It's important to note things like this because people get frustrated when they feel they are doing everything right and don't lose weight.

Never felt better.
For people with diabetes low carb is a good idea. For people who are morbidly obese, low carb is good choice. But for people who are otherwise healthy that want to lose weight need to explore what works for them. Initial weight loss is great, but if you cannot see yourself forever giving up bread or pasta then maybe low carb is not the answer.
I love bread and I love pasta and I never had to give them up to lose 40 pounds. I did not have to give them up to maintain that loss. I eat from all the food groups and do just fine.
I eat all those things op, and i drink alcohol, i eat whatever i want whenever i want. .. and i lose 1 pound a week steady.
I write a food diary, weigh evetything in grams, eat about 1300 to 1600 calories per day.

Do you have a medical reason for doing all that recordkeeping, or are you just that interested in your intake? I'd like to have better track of the calories involved in what I eat, too, but it seems like tons of work to look up every single thing I eat and find out the calories, etc., or is there an easier way to do it?
And because I didn't plan anything to cook this morning, I am going to heat up a frozen lasagna (gasp!) for dinner (but without merlot or dessert).
