Get up and take Fido for a walk. The couch and remote will still be there when you get back.

don't go on a diet; make a lifestyle change instead.

It's true that speeds up your metabolism, but seriously - the only real safe, permanent way is simple. Eat less and/or exercise more. (Burn more calories than you take in.) Easier said than done, so why is it so hard when it's such a simple answer? Motivation. If I were you, I'd concentrate on that rather than focussing on tips.

Actually, quitting smoking and losing weight are a lot alike. We try to use tips like posting encouraging notes all over, sucking on carrot sticks, finding other ways to keep ourselves busy and distracted from our vices, even using medical assistance or herbal supplements. And most of the time it works for a while but fails in the long run.

Look within yourself. When the motivation is REALLY there (your motivation and not somebody else's) you will make the permanent changes necessary to become and stay a smaller person. It ain't gonna be easy, you just have to get sick and tired of being sick and tired of it.

Good luck to you!
YIKES Brass, I just quit smoking a month ago!!! You mean I can start again??? Only fooling.. in one month I have gained about 5 lbs. But have cut back on the eating and will be getting more exercise soon! The magic bullet is stop eating!!

i didn't think i was overweight until i lost over 10 pounds without even trying by eating smaller portions. i was having tummy problems so i just wasn't able to eat much and before i knew it my cloths were too big and i had dropped a size. i prefer this look so i continue to eat smaller portions and actually my stomach prefers it too!! i also almost cut out all soda, just once in a while i'll have a mix of regular and diet and i drink a lot of water and juice.

I used to have a book, can't for the life of me remember the name of it, that suggested easy but very smart changes for regular old eating. It suggested that instead of 1 cup of steamed white rice you could eat 10 cups of steamed cauliflower for the same amount of calories and more nutrition (not that you would) and you could make a sundae with frozen yogurt and fresh fruit and still use a little chocolate sauce and have 3 of them for the same calories as the same sundae made with ice cream & nuts.

Things I never even thought of, like eating english muffins instead of bagels.

Sometimes it is more about making smarter choices rather than eating less.

Also the book suggested that if you wanted a cookie or something that it was o.k. to have one and enjoy every last crumb of it. Then continue on, rather than say "I blew it" and spend the rest of the day eating junk. Have that cookie before the craving makes you eat a dozen.

If I can remember the book I will post it. It was full of good ideas for ways to make better choices.

Consume less calories than needed. Work out daily. Break meals into 5-6 meals throughout the day. 3 meals should be actual meals, and the other 2-3 should be snacks like apple with peanut butter, celery with an orange or almonds. Eat as many natural foods as possible.

I disasgree with this so much. Of course it depends on your schedule, but let's say someone is working a 8-5 job. You have to eat before 7? Your body doesn't know. I could see eating a dinner around 6-7 after work. But you also need a bedtime snack. Not ice cream or whatever. Something healthy. Otherwise you could go 12hours without food. 7pm-7am. IMO not healthy. Have something that will take time to digest, but is light in your stomach.

Best weight loss tip - Stop being lazy and looking for any excuse not to get off of your fat and lazy A$$e$ to get in shape. Too many people always come up with excuses or "buts" so they are destined to live an unhappy life of being obese, single and will probably die before they get to see their kids through their tough teen years.

Other tips:

Eat brown rice instead of white rice

Eat whole wheat bread instead of white bread

Run instead of jog, if you cant run then jog, if you cant jog then get on a bike - walking doesnt really do much for you.

Lift weights. Left heavy not the "high rep low weight" that most women incorrectly think is best for them.

Drink water and plenty of it. Stay away from soda and no more cafe mochacchinos with whip cream from Starbucks.

Join a gym. Especially if you have difficulty in motivating yourself to workout. Too many people have equipment at home that is never used. If you force yourself to go to the gym, you'll do some work when youre there. Too many distractions at home to workout successfully and often enough to see results.

Wear form fitting or revealing clothes. Great way to motivate yourself by seeing how bad you really look or seeing how good you really look. No more baggy sweatshirt and sweatpants to cover yourself up.

Also:

Stop snacking - If you must eat outside of your normal eating times, eat something that is good for you - baby carrots, triscuits, granola, raw unsalted nuts, cottage cheese with raisins.

No more creamy salad dressing - this stuff is high in fat and calories.

Get out and do something that is aerobic - tennis, raquetball, full court basketball, run stairs, take your dog for a trail RUN (not trail walk).

Have a goal in mind - a picture of the body you want, or you want to run a 6 minute mile, do 50 pullups, etc. Something that will challenge you each time you workout.

Don't drink your calories.

Eat some lean protein at every meal; it keeps you satisfied.

Keep moving!

And above all, don't get discouraged if you're not losing weight as fast as you/your mother/your spouse/Denise Austin/your kids think you should. Everyone stumbles; weight loss and healthy living are not all-or-nothing projects. Keep at it, and you will be rewarded.
