Most companies are NOT able to pay market clearing wage because there is NO RECOVERY. Yes, no economic recovery in sight and unless we go thru deflation and depression there will never be one. The FED has been stalling and postponing deflation since 2001 simulating or faking economic growth with ZIRP and spending money that we don’t have, money stollen from our kids and grandkids.

It was all FAKE and PHONY. Our real economy has been dead since 2001.
Good Luck!

Yeah, I’m sure you’re in a position to interview and train tons of professional staff.

Thanks for the outright laugh with your entire post. I loved it.

What can you expect from those liberal education institutions with mostly liberal teachers and professors? My favorite clowns are those who get economic degrees and call themselves economists......LOL. What a joke.

Where I work we used to get 100-200 apps for ONE position. Now we struggle to get 10, many postings get less than 6 when they're open for a month+ and half are not qualified.

The businesses in my area cannot stay open, the managers & owners are basically doing everything. Some retailers, e.g. the Walgreens near me, simply said they are no longer open evenings or weekends. 8:30-5:30 M-F: it's the manager, one worker and one pharmacist running the whole store.

It appears to be a problem in all sectors but somewhat less acute in IT.

We are now 6+ months out from the "free money" spigots being turned off. Where the hell did everyone go?
6 applicants, half are qualified, which is 3. Why can't the employer hire one of those 3?

From your threads, it’s clear that you have a well respected degree in economics.

There have been lots of retirements in the past two years, which means higher-paid jobs opening up for younger people, and therefore fewer warm bodies to fill the jobs where being able to fog a mirror is good enough. Some demographers had been predicting a coming labor shortage for years, and it appears the pandemic did a lot to accelerate this trend.

Plenty of retail establishments have had ridiculous hours for some time. While a few people undoubtedly like being able to buy a hamburger at midnight, or buy shoelaces at 4am, the utility of such conveniences to society as a whole is questionable. Businesses that depend on a labor force that will work "on demand" for low wages are in trouble, IMO.

Minimally qualified.

We get a fairly high number of apps from people who are only half serious or half qualified. They have a related degree but no experience, etc... or vice versa. People who think this might be a good "retirement" job or something like that. Best example is English instructor - every Tom, Dick, and Harry with an English degree regardless of what they did with it "thinks" they can teach English. We used to get dozens of MFAs in English apply to teach developmental writing and they are technically not qualified. Back when there were 100-200 apps per position, that was a good 35% of them. Then there are some percentage of people who are just feeling things out.

So there's a lot of weeding.

If we only have 6 and only 3 meet the quals, we might be lucky to have 1 viable option who actually wants the job. Then they look at the housing costs and we're screwed.

I think your organization has what we like to call "beer budget, champagne taste". You want the best of the best highly qualified applicants, but cannot afford to pay the cost that it will take to attract them. Guess what that means? you are going to have to make do with sub par candidates and pay the cost of dealing with them (whether that be through investing in training them up, or making do without the part of the job that they are not qualified for), or increasing your wages. This is honestly not rocket science. If the state did not vote to give you the budget to get the best candidates, then you are going to have to adjust. Everyone in the world has to make that compromise at some point in their lives. This honestly is beginning to sound like entitled whining.
