Goffstown – Democratic presidential candidate John Edwards proposed today that the United States spend $5 billion annually to lead a worldwide effort to end global poverty through education and health care initiatives.

The former North Carolina senator said his effort would not only be a “good and moral thing,” but it would also make the United States safer.

“We know that terrorists thrive in failed states and in states torn apart by internal conflict and poverty,” he said in a speech at Saint Anselm College. In Africa and Muslim countries, he said, millions of children are being educated “in madrassas run by militant extremists.

“When you understand that,” he said, “it suddenly becomes clear: global poverty is not just a moral issue for the United States,” but also a “national security issue.”

In his 30-minute address to students, faculty and activists, Edwards also reiterated his plan for domestic universal health care, an ambitious effort to address global warming and repair of this nation’s public education system, which he said “remains shockingly unequal” more than 50 years after the landmark Brown v. Board of Education ruling outlawing segregated schools.

I want to see Dick Cheney open his wallet just once before he kicks off. Especially now that Halliburton has its shiny new headquarters in the United Arab Emirates.

Education would end the world's problems, really? I mean education is so overrated, LOL! Education is absolutely the key to ending 99% of the world's problems. If you are educated you won't be poor, racist, violent (because you could carry on a discussion) believe in evolution, conservation, etc...! I know most Bush/Republicans supporters will disagree with this because they are in the dark, AKA: UNEDUCATED.

Default I agree with so much of what John Edwards says

and he has the most well-developed policy plans of any of the candidates, but it's hard to know whether you can take him at his word or not, with the opportunistic leftward shift he made in the last election (from what I've heard).

Would poverty end if everybody were poor?

Edwards made his millions being an ambulance chaser going after "victims' of shoddy hospitals and doctors. Many settled just to get this guy off their backs and to cut down on bad publicity.
You folks who think Edwards is great should do some research. You will find he is a phony who will say anything and do anything if that's what his audience wants to hear.
Just like that other phony, Kerry......bet you didn't know Kerry got a bad discharge from the navy. Jimmy Carter pardoned all deserters and awols, Kerry was one of the recipients of that blanket pardon. Without it he couldn't have run for dog catcher.
But for committed liberals, good character doesn't matter.....this much I have found out in recent years.
