My husband is from Barcelona and he balked at Spain being called a third world country!!!!
Let's see here:
High violent crime rate
Mass shootings
Collapsed economy
High political corruption
Inept health care system
Lack of social services
Excessive inmate population
Tainted food supply
Lack of retirement and social security

Wait......that's USA!!!!!! People really have no idea what reality is!!! Not saying Spain is perfect by any means, but 3rd world???? Come on!!!!

Even the post above, depicting *Third World* countries, does NOT mention First or Second World !
Just the legend : *Not Third world*

Sadly a lot of people use the term *Third World*,
without knowing what the First World or Second World really is/was ...

So ... , I would not say that Spain, is or was considered a *Third World Country*
Is it becoming *like* a Third World Country ?
Who knows !

I mentioned the word *like*, because of what the situation (politically or otherwise) is, at the moment.

I would just call it *Badly in trouble* ?
But then ... , which country is not *in trouble*, somewhere !
For each country, just substitute another version of *badly*
Hmm funny, as sweden is neither in NATo or communist, sweden is a third world country :P
just sayin'...

on a more serious note I think the "third world" thing is getting more blurry nowdays,
I mean there is people living in the united states, the richest country in the world, living below the povery line of the UN, and they're not just a few neither.
That's just one example, many countries have all levels of socioeconomical situations...

Well, the story continues... 'Fichados' al denunciar a Aguirre | Madrid | EL MUNDO

The local policemen who were runned over, when asking for the car's papers by the powerful politician Esperanza Aguirre have been recorded by the national spanish police...

Hallå där,
Uhuh. Sweden is/was not NATO or Communist but definitively Capitalist ?
If you agree there, than Sweden is/was part of First World.

The European Union where Sweden joined in 1995, is determined a Capitalist group of nations.

So ... , yeah if you only consider the first actual definition of
first, second and third world definitions,
and not what third world is thought of today,
then you *could* call Sweden third world until 1995 ...
(IF you do consider Sweden NOT capitalistic).

When the idea of First, Second and Third world first was created,
the NATO countries were classified as a *group*.
Sweden is a *neutral* country and has been for a long time,
and probably will stay neutral for a lot longer time.
A purely conscious decision !

So, not NATO, and definitively also NOT Communist !

First World were/are (?) countries aligned with Capitalism and NATO.
Second World would then be the countries aligned with Communism.
Then finally *Third World* would be all the other *developing nations*.

The first world classification included Capitalist countries.
At that time and even today, Capitalism can be construed as:

Capitalism is defined as a social and economic system
that in which capital assets are mainly owned and controlled by private persons,
labor is purchased for money wages, capital gains accrue to private owners,
and the price mechanism is utilized to allocate capital goods between uses.
(Capitalism - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia)

or a bit more simply stated:

An economic and political system in which a country’s trade and industry
are controlled by private owners for profit, rather than by the state.
(oxforddictionaries.com/us/definition/american_english/capitalism)

But then again, only if you so agree... , up to 1995.
Sweden joined the European Union, officially, in 1995.
The European Union today is definitively a Capitalistic groupe.

I have lived and worked in Sweden in the late 50's and early 60's,
and have done major business with Swedish enterprises in the 80's.
In my book, Sweden was and is, a First World Country.

Justanote about capitalism.
There will always be some, controlled by the government, entities,
but as long as the majority of enterprises is controlled by individuals,
then that country can be called Capitalistic.

Finally, your smiley at the end of your comment did show that you actually know all of this !
Ha en trevlig dag min CD vän, och det var ett nöje att diskutera några saker med dig.

So what was Sweden until 1995? Communist and third world? But Greece was 1st world?

What a logic.

I think it is dumb to classify couuntries in first world and third world, because there is no proper definition. Lets say you put 20K as a upper limit, then Chile is a third world country today, but a first world country in a few years. That makes no sense to me.

I believe in 4 groups.
high income, such as US, Australia, Denmark, Germany
upper middle income, such as Chile, Greece, Poland, Estonia
lower middle income, such as China, South Africa, Brazil, Turkey
low income, such as India, Pakistan, Kongo

Spain was previously in the high income group, but has dropped down to the upper middle income group.

Yes there *was*. It absolutely nothing to do with income level !

Today, however, people have been *redefining* what first, second and third world is all about !
