Since when is freedom a ridiculous demand? If he wants the apartments, cars and money of all of Ukraine, I can understand but not when the great majority in eastern Ukraine want independence.
Russia has been settling ethnic Russians into eastern Ukraine for many, many many years, as part of their Russification efforts. Furthermore, Russian intelligence and special forces have been operating there in recent years to stir up trouble. The Russian army has been carrying out attacks on Ukranians in the region. Sure, the Ukrainians have shot back, but what nation will just sit passively and accept all this??? And sure, some of these people want the area to become Russian - to begin with, they ARE Russian - that was the whole idea from the beginning! And they've also been manipulated by Russian intelligence! None of this makes it right for Russia to steal land this way!
If the Canadian govt resettles a million Quebecois into Vermont and New Hampshire and then, stirred up by Canadian intelligence and later, aided by the Canadian army, this group of nominal Americans is engaging in hostilities with Americans and say that they want the northern portions of those states to be recognized as Canadian soil, the USA isn't going to say "Sure! Take our territory, Canada! What else would you like?"
Yes, if Putin wanted to negotiate he would have been more reasonable in his demands.

And America is settling soldiers all over europe since Bush or before, so? Plus it sounds like conspiracy theory. These people have been living there for centuries, it's like the Palestinians whining about the "jew settlers" when it's proven jewish people were living there since milennia.
If Ukraine wants to join NATO, that is their prerogative.
Well, then you won't mind if a Mexican cartels stage a military coup, ask to join them to the CSTO (Russia's military alliance) and Russia place military bases in Mexico? It will be solely Mexico's prerogative, right?

Most immigrants - from any nation, don't engage in violence with their host country and ask to have a large portion given over to their mother country. But that's what the Russians are doing. And yes, it IS a plan, it's part of Russification - a centuries long struggle by Russia to take over its neighbors and erase their own ethnic identity and replace it with a feeling of being Russian. If the people can be made to believe they *are* Russian and to forget about their own national identity, history, culture, etc then they will passively accept being ruled by Russia - that's the whole idea.
