Trump did not promise to attack anybody, he did say a price would be paid. Obama said that once and sanctioned somebody's grandma...so it could be anything.
Of course we would not attack Russian bases, unless they were the ones using gas. And I really doubt they would do something so risky. No need to get into such hypothetical when real lives are at stake. And no, our ships are invincible to Russian attacks in the region short of a nuke. It would be a suicidal mission to attack our destroyers.
Who says it would be suicide? It just depnds on how it's done. Most ASMs are long range stand off types. This whole mess is crazy and we all know who started it. There's some form of insanity afoot.
The Mediterranean would simply add some Russian scrap metal and crab chow if that was attempted. And that's it. Destroyers aren't threatened at all by subs and aircraft. Its the other way around actually. They are so good, they don't even need escorts.
Trump promised to attack Syria. I hope he will not hit Russian bases or places of deployment of Russian military. Because this will be beginning of the war. With a high degree of probability, the ships will be flooded with retaliatory attack Russians.
Russian officers are embedded with Syrian government units. The Syrian forces have also evacuated many of the military installations around the country. Aircraft transferred to Russia's air base at Lattakia.
There are conflicting reports in the same paper on UK government backing the strike on Syria. Today's version had the government backing retaliation. Tomorrow's paper has May having told Trump evidence that Assad was behind attack is needed before supporting airstrikes.
I'm not sure, but it looks like 2 submarines are on duty in the Mediterranean.
That is why Russia has a base in Tartus. Diesel electric subs have pluses and minuses. When on battery power they're all but undetectable they are so quiet. The batteries have to be recharged though and that's where the diesel engines come in. They have to run on the surface or snorkel which makes them vulnerable. The need for diesel fuel makes them have to stay close to supplies unlike nuclear subs.
The Russians have more than just 2 in the area also. I'll bet at least 2 Akula class as well.
Ships nowadays are good to scare rag tag countries like Iraq or Libya.....a rain of missiles (in conjunction with subs) can turn these destroyers into marine wildlife habitat very quickly...
I suspect the neocons want to push Putin into a corner if they do attack Syria and humiliate him if he folds (and lose all credibility with current and potential allies) I hope I'm wrong.....pray for these sailors...
