Israel again covered itself with a civilian plane to attack Damascus (Syria). The plane was landed at the Russian airfield Khmeimim. Someday this will end in tragedy.

It's going to get a lot easier to travel in Siberia.

This will be heavily subsidized though.

Russian soldiers keep dying in Syria and your only concern is Israel bombing terrorists.

The last 7 years of slow growth was all Medvedev's fault! This time it will finally be different!

Heaven knows job growth and economic growth are needed, but where is he going to get the money? How's the price of oil and natural gas doing these days, on the global market?

That's nice. I just wish it would get easier and cheaper to travel to Siberia. The days of $750 round-trip flights on Aeroflot from the US West Coast to Khabarovsk are long gone, never to return again. : (

I wonder; couldn't a Canadian carrier be persuaded to start a Russia service, so we could get Aeroflot back again? Canada still sends a variety of specialists over there on a regular basis....

From what I understand the government and financial institutions have been preparing for worse than we see now when it comes to prices concerning oil and gas. They've been following the squirrels philosophy and getting far more bang for the buck spent on top of that. Stability is everything.

I think that would be great. I want to see Lake Baikal without having to fly around the freaking world to do it. I just looked up flying there and tickets are 2 to 3 k $ with 2 or 3 stops and 30 to 40 hours flying time. Ouch.

Not sure what your starting point is. But yes, Alaska Airlines used to fill their planes full of their own tour groups to Baikal, with a stop in Khabarovsk first. Actually, they'd put their groups on internal Aeroflot flights to Irkutsk, since they weren't allowed to fly inside Russia, other than designated port cities. But still, they made it easy for their groups. Now, if flying from the West Coast USA, you have to go through Korea ($3000), then from Seoul into Russia (more $$$), and then from Khabarovsk or Vladivostok to Baikal. Still, this is better than going the other way, and dealing with Moscow's airports. The jet lag is less, too.

And IMO, the most interesting approach to Baikal is through Buryatia, which culturally is more interesting, though Irkutsk is a beautiful city. So is Ulan Ude. Buryatia has some breathtaking regions to explore, too.
