Lisbon and Porto have their dirty, gloomy parts as well, you just won't see them on your kitschy tourism websites
A lot of people, if not the majority, live in modern apartment blocks, not quaint little houses. And those blocks look the same in Lisbon, Porto, Setúbal etc. Some are actually nice, but still, they are interchangeable.

I have not ruled at some point experiencing life in various European countries. I did have a Portuguese passport at one time before becoming a naturalized American citizen(need to check into that) and Spain and Italy would be at the top of my bucket list if that route were an option.

Good point I agree, but I suspect she knows that it sounds slightly off, that might be what she's aiming for.
