What is your question regarding Madeira?

I know very little about it.

I'm just asking people to tell me more about it. Climate, people, culture, touristic attractions...

Madeira is part of Portugal...

It's pretty much like the rest of Portugal, just a few degrees milder in the winter, thus more tropical in terms of nature, mild enough to grow bananas and stuff like that.

Apart from nature, the airport is one attraction It is feared by pilots because there tend to be ugly winds that can wipe the plane off the runway when landing. What adds to the adventure is the location of the runway, built on pillars right next to the ocean:

Their carnaval is relatively big, although of course not like in Rio.

Oh my...

I never imagined there would be an airport runway like that, built on pillars!!

That's crazy!

I intend to visit Madeira some day, and I will surely take pictures of that runaway!

Never been to Madeira although it is very beautiful and focused on tourism (I personally hate to be among tourists) unlike the Azores but not distinct enough from the Azores to catch my interest.

The best beach in the Madeira archipelago is on the neighboring island of Porto Santo.

The culture is Portuguese but distinctly Madieran Portuguese people can tell the difference the accent for one is distinct and madeirans are extremely proud of their island.

They are known for their New Years fireworks show. The topography is very hilly with many beautiful vistas to enjoy.

I lived there for six months. You can safely change that to extremely hilly. Many communities seem to perch like birds on the sides of the steep slopes. People used to say that in Madeira there were only two directions: up and down.

The times that I arrived the landing never failed to rouse a few people to make the sign of the cross, but that was on the old runway, which was short and ended at the edge of a cliff. It was considered one of the most dangerous in the world....the runway on pillars is a big improvement, and impressive. Built by a Brazilian company, I believe.

Well, every region has its own dialect (not accent, accents only apply to foreign languages afaik), I am not even native, yet I can tell most of the dialects on the mainland apart by now, For native speakers that's even easier, and Madeira is just one of many, there is nothing distinct or special about Madeira.

Actually, in view of the distance I find it surprising how similar Madeirenses are to mainland Portuguese people.

I find the Azores more distinct somehow, and they feel different, more like Ireland

Come, come! amigo. A little kindness for old dogs.

We may be naufragios que andam, but my impression is that many English and Germans use the private hospitals. And I think in places like the Algarve those clients have given these hospitals a shot in the arm (so to speak), which also provides expanded medical facilities for the Portuguese that use these hospitals - and they are many. And this in turn helps slow down the emigration of Portuguese doctors and nurses from the country. I have had two Portuguese doctors, one in a private hospital in Alvor and the other in one in Lagos, say straight out that they would have left with their families except for their employment in a private hospital.

Furthermore, German geezers seem quite willing to learn Portuguese, though admittedly the English ones are still struggling with English .
