My best dining experience for food, service and ambiance was the El Tovar on the rim of the Grand Canyon. Food was delicious, service was impeccable, and the view......well, nothing to compare it to - spectacular doesn't even do it Spent the first few days of my honeymoon here some 15 years ago. I think the total bill was a $125'ish for the two of us - expensive for us newlyweds just starting out but we didn't care in the least. I don't mind spending $$ on a fabulous meal.
Best Meal, Best Service and Best Atmosphere of my entire life
I've thought about trying the one here in Dallas, but I keep hearing that it's not nearly as good as Vegas. Too hit or miss with the food and the service. But it's still new so maybe I'll give it a bit more time.
The best restaurant I've ever been to was actually at a hotel. It was the YO Ranch Holiday Inn in Kerrville, Texas, which was owned by John Wayne at one time. There's a ten foot stuffed grizzly in the entrance. I was really skinny at the time about 110lbs, but I really ate a lot that Christmas Day. There was a guy going around giving us champagne, which I drank a lot of. Then there was some kind of huge roast that you could ask the chef to give you a hunk of. I ate a piece of that, which was about an inch thick and about six to eight inches in diameter. Then I ate two plates full of shrimp and a lot of bread -maybe 20-30 pieces. Then I had more champagne. Then I proceeded to have some vegetables and then more champagne. Then I ate two pieces of cheesecake and I weighed about 10lbs. more when my Tony Lama's stumbled out the door of the YO Ranch feelin' pretty good.
They've got also got a restaurant in Dallas with game from the YO Ranch in Kerrville. Pretty tasty. And one of the few restaurants that has a good selection of game.
The best filet mignon I've ever had was at The Madonna Inn in San Luis Obispo. Yes, that hotel where all the rooms have a different theme! Never would've thought their resturant would knock my socks off, but, YOWZA~ *drool* It's a good 4 hour drive for us to get there, so we don't eat there very often.
Been there. What I remember was the most delicious Black Forest Cake. And am I delusional in thinking they had some sort of waterfall in the men's room that was a tourist attraction in itself? (I was like 11)
Best Chicken Fried Steak is Babe's Chicken Dinner House in Garland, Texas. They serve CFS, Fried Chicken and some other stuff (who knows what I always get the CFS) family style. Absolutely delicious.
They've got other locations but Garland is the original.
No Olive Garden yet, sorry. But I've been to Applebee's and liked it!!
Don't waste your time....Olive Garden sucks and is an insult to real home-cooked Italian food. And its overpriced for the frozen, reheated crap they serve.
I'm lucky I live in an area where there are a lot of Italians and there are TONS of family-owned mom-and-pop Italian restaurants, as well as pizza places. I have pity for people who live places where Olive Garden is their bet option for Italian food, and they think Papa John's and Domino's is good pizza.
My favorite restaurants tend to be the local Italian places....Rossi's in Archbald, PA, Villa Maria in Scranton, among many others. I also love seafood, but seafood isn't something that's really good in NE PA. Red Lobster is about as good as it gets here....so I'm sure there are people who live near the shore who pity me for not having much better seafood than chain Red Lobster. Just about any of the seafood I've had at the Jersey shore, in Maryland, and in Myrtle Beach has been great. I felt like I died and went to heaven with the buffet at Bennett's in Myrtle Beach. Also, a place called Hooper's, across the bay from Ocean City, MD, was excellent, and has an all you can eat seafood dinner, including crab.
I'm defintely not into the fancy snooty restaurants, though. I hate dressing up (dressing up for me is a sweater, jeans, and brown loafers instead of sneakers), and the fancy snooty high-falootin places just tend to be overpriced and serve all sorts of wacky food with small portions and strange sauces drizzled around the plate...not my cup of tea.
