I think it all depends on where you live.

I don't live in a particularly prosperous area to begin with, and all of the thrift stores are located in the poorest part of town. That means that they get a lot of low-quality donations and that the few good-quality donations that they do get are snapped up really quickly.

I'm far from a snob and would have absolutely no problem buying clothing for myself and my husband from thrift stores if the brands that you mentioned were available and if the clothes were in good shape. As it stands, though, I can buy a Target-brand T-shirt that is clearly faded, pilled and shrunken for $1, or I can buy a brand new Walmart-brand T-shirt for $3.
