I love to go to our goodwill for books because they have almost new kids books for .50-1.00. Last visit as we were looking I noticed a men's north face jacket on a mannequin and thought about getting it for my husband if it was cheap. It was $99!!! I was shocked. I can get NF brand new on sale for that price. And to think someone gave that away and they are charging that price for lower income folks.

Do you notice this at your local thrift stores or Goodwill?
Goodwill is the WORST offender by far!

Despite their $1 t-shirt rack, I refuse to shop there again.

True, or like some, they hide behind their charity status and pay their workers substandard pay and CEO six figures.

I am guessing you are talking about St. Vincent DePaul? If so I agree, they are AWESOME!

Our local store has a $0.50 rack up front to help them clear space, and I have gotten WONDERFUL deals, like brand new Banana Republic tops and one pair of Sacs 5th Ave wool trousers.

They do, trust me.

Ok, just in case you guys haven't noticed, I DO NOT like Goodwill, in fact I despise the whole model of that company. And yes, IMO it's a company, NOT a charity.

yeah thrift stores even like goodwill aren't what they used to be. 10 years ago when i was in hs thrift stores weren't really hugely popular a few kids were into that thrift style and bought old tshirts but not what it is today in terms of kids shopping there as well as moms and stuff.

alot more thrift stores are popping up as well. i was in one the other day they wanted like $3 per book thats crazy prices for a thrift store with bins of books thats more like discount bookstore prices.

Salvation Army is much cheaper than Goodwill. I just like browsing, you never know what you might find. I usually don't bother looking for clothes, you can do better at retail stores or online when they have sales, etc.

We recently got a nice kitchen dinette set, table and 4 chairs, for $75, and a nice end table for $35 from SA. You just have to look, never know what you may find---once I found a Kate Spade purse for $5, perfect condition!

That I am.

It is the only thrift shop we have in town and I love going there. I have to contain myself when they send me an email notice that books are on sale (again) 4 for a dollar. I so want to get more books, but must not until I am done with the current dozen or so already here.

I love going in for after holiday sales - made out like a bandit this past season. I also love buying up all their baskets when they offer then for a dime each.

I don't miss the high cost of Goodwill... and I have not stepped foot in one in over 10 years (prices were getting bad back then) and never will again.

I popped into one the other day and was speechless they wanted $300 each for some sofas that should have been headed for the landfill. Broken springs, horribly stained fabric, and they smelled like they'd spent the last 10 years in a Frat house.

I have. I have found prices at the Goodwill higher for everything than in St. Louis. However the selection here is much better!

Its because they are so darn choosy about what they will take. The cheap stuff gets weeeded out. I am sick that i have had to pay to dump perfectly good items so many times now. Real anger inducing is when I buy it there, use it gently for a few weeks and they wont take it back.

I'm ready to dump thrift stores. The quality is poor. Clothing often has holes in it.

I like to buy on thredup, because they sell used clothing but it's all vetted carefully first. They don't take clothing that is out of style, has noticeable damage, holes, etc. Yes, it cost a little more to buy from them, but the quality is better. They will also list any flaws in the item so you will know that before you make a purchase.

Goodwill is a cesspool.

I bought a quite nice and heavy winter-coat at Sears on clearance, 18 bucks.

I gave-up on places like Goodwill and similar....that coat in used condition, at a thrift-store, would have cost me quite a bit more than buying it new at Sears.
