I have seen that too.
A friend of mine used to say, he has Cherokee. Well, his DNA results didn't show a 1% on Native American.
The amount of people I've encountered in Northeast TN who claim to have recent Cherokee ancestors is hilarious. It seems like every other person you meet has a great grandmother who was "full-blooded." Perhaps they're under the impression that being so close to the Cherokee National Forest automatically imbues them with American Indian DNA. A couple of my acquaintances were quite upset when their DNA tests turned up zero Native American DNA. One of them was downright outraged when Sub-Saharan Africa was one of the trace regions.
My results were nearly identical on both tests and aren't surprising given my genealogical research and my Appalachian heritage:
Honestly, I know it's just me but I don't understand this fascination with having some Native American DNA. It's not like it's something rare or like it makes you a better person somehow. There are hundreds of millions of ordinary people from Mexico southward that have a relatively large percentage of Native American and no one makes a big deal of it. Am I missing something?

I don't understand the fascination, either. Perhaps it makes them feel more connected with the history of a certain region in some strange way. Southern Appalachia (NE TN in particular) seems to be the epicenter of this attitude. Perhaps because this region has a strong connection with the Cherokee and it is apparent in many of the place names and folklore, they feel drawn to identify with it. After all, it may be difficult to yell "speak English or git out!" at Mexican immigrants if you're recent ancestors were outsiders themselves (I'm only joking...). I suppose you could apply this theory in a broader context to Americans in general.
My ancestors settled in upper East Tennessee fresh off the boat from England and haven't left since, but I don't have one iota of Cherokee DNA.

I'm 2.7% Neanderthal, and the rest is Irish/German/English/Finn.
What I can't understand is why anyone would be upset if they found out they had some African ancestors. Wouldn't bother me at all.
And as an aside, I was hoping I was part Native American because I've always wanted to open a Casino....
Because they don't want to acknowledge slavery and their own racism. Being black is still a stigma in this country. And if you have black blood how did it get their? Most likely your ancestor owned a slave at some point. People love to pretend that their ancestors were wonderful loving non-racist people. The truth is shocking. I have an ancestor who arrived in the late 1600's. I've always suspected that in 200 years someone in my family was a slave owner. And it wouldn't surprise me if there were products of that in the family.
My husband discovered that a not so distant ancestor was willed two slaves by his father. Completely rattled my husband.
European isn't a skin color, BTW. That makes them even more stupid.
As a nationality, European isn't a skin color. As ethnic DNA, it pretty much is, and that's what this topic is about. A person of full African descent living in Europe will show up as African on a DNA ethnicity report, not European, no matter how long they/their ancestry has been living in Europe.

1. It absolves you of all guilt for slavery and genocide because you are admitted to the victim class.
2. It makes you fascinting and exotic and people will like you more.
3. White people are boring and don't have a culture or ethnicity.
In regards to their 1-2% percent African, could be North African, which is Caucasian.
If that 1-2% is Sub-Saharan, then they are Blacks.
Most people with Mediterranean ancestry, such as Spaniards, Italians, Greek, Turks, etc, have some North African DNA, which is not black, just people from northern Africa, which are Middle Eastern (caucasian)
In my particular case, I have around 9% sub-saharan, and is from one of my great grandmother, she is mixed.
Here is my Eurogenes K-13 results:
Population
North_Atlantic 19.97

Northeast African isn't the same as Northwest African. What are your Eurogenes K36.
