That's why they're called "Major League Cities".

It would be interesting to compare the AP list with that of the NYT, which uses its own style guide. I've noticed, for example, that NYT datelines don't append a state name to Sacramento as do the AP's.

Majority who believed that were foreigners, so I suspect it's because of US History, Branding (Philadelphia Cream Cheese, Sam Adams Boston Lager, Boston Market ect,) and how little the states get coverage compared to the city. As for the adults in the US, the more common answer was how similar Philadelphia and Pennsylvania sounded so they mixed the both up. I just pin it down to geographical ignorance.

Not that weird given that it's the capital of a state that holds much of the NYC metropolitan area.

I mean the list includes Newark even though there's a decently sized Newark in Delaware not too far away. Clearly they just figure, hey this is a city in our metro, so people will know what we mean.

I agree though I'd leave off Charlotte.

Yonkers and White Plains, but not Oakland or Long Beach? This appears to be for NYT local readers, not a national audience.
