What tonygeorgia posted is NOT representative of many parts of Atlanta. What he showed was probably the most affordable part of the metro for new homes, for many reasons.
In my area (NE side, inside the I-285 perimeter) $200,000 would get you a decent condo, or a nice mid-century brick ranch (if you search hard).
NPDodge Omaha Nebraska Real Estate and Council Bluffs Iowa Real Estate (http://searchne.npdodge.com/index.cfm?action=listing_detail&property_id=210047 26 - broken link)
This is going to be skewed as home prices are dramatically low right now.
In Twin Cities burbs you can buy a $200,000 that is BALLER
Disgusted by those prices in California. Stayed in a house there in SD last summer where if it was in Minnesota it wouldn't be anything special, maybe a nicer- $350,000 home, but there it was listed at $1.2 million with a 1/8th acre lot. BLOWS MY MIND again,!! lol.
Have a cousin paying $1600/mo for a condo with 2 tiny rooms and 2 tiny bathrooms and that's about it. He is however 5 blocks from the beach, but still. $1600/mo mortgage in MN gets you into a very nice house. With a yard. With privacy. With nice schools and nice roads and no crime.
You can buy something nice from something in an urban old money neighborhood to even some newer homes in the suburbs. I'll put it this way, if your range is 150k, you can find something nice in any school district or town in the area. This includes generally affluent school districts like Fayetteville-Manlius, Skaneateles, Westhill and Jamesville-DeWitt.
