Of course being black is indirectly part of it. Because from experience we know that in Europe (and in the US as well if you are honest) black people are usually not nearly as wealthy as white people. However, I am sure even most white people could not afford such a bag and the saleswoman might have reacted the same way.
That doesn't mean, though, that the saleswoman is racist, after all, how could she be racist when she knows most white people, i.e. of her own race, can't afford that, either?

Maybe she was just trying to keep someone from losing face...

I'd love to hear your logic on this one.

It is possible that it was race. All I say is that if we're going to make that accusation against the clerk, let's have evidence of racism. The filter could have been based on many things. Demeanor, dress, nationality, things she said, etc. Presumably Oprah was not inexpensively dressed, but it's possible that there was just a clash between Oprah's tastes and the clerk's tastes. Maybe the clerk had just dealt with 5 American tire-kickers that day, and didn't want a sixth. We don't know.

What is your evidence that the clerk acted based on race?

Would she have assumed Honey Boo Boo could afford the purse?

I myself would assume very very few people could afford a $38,000 purse. No matter what color they are.

What's pathetic is this fraud actually is traveling about the world and pretends to care about people while she spends enormous sums on things like purses.

Not at all--- both came from nothing, both are getting rich on television shows, only Honey Boo Boos isn't causing suicides. I'm pretty sure by now Honey Boo Boo could also afford an Oprah level purse but might not have such screwed up values -- yet.

Now she's a 1%er and truly believes she is special.
I'm not an Oprah fan either--my attitude is more along the lines of "suck it up" when I'm faced with challenges--but what does that have to do with her building a media empire and being one of the richest people in the world? You may not like HOW she made her money, but she' obviously had the business saavy to do it. No one can say she's not a self made woman with extraordinary business sense.

I am white but have been discriminated against in the past just because I am ugly as hell. Maybe this is what happened to Oprah.

Honeey boo boo makes around $15K per episode and she's a performer. Oprah owns a media empire and she's a billionaire.

The man was a merchant seaman who had just returned from Asia and he along with his fellow seamen had gotten paid and they asked him to go out and buy cars for them....which he did in the SF bay area.

I lived in Castro Valley at the time and read about the car purchases in the newspaper.
In a similar vain, at a conference a keynote speaker related the case of an IBM executive who went to his local bank for a transaction. The bank offered validated parking to avoid a couple dollar fee. The IBM executive forgot to get his validation and reentered the bank and was informed by the attendant at the door that he couldn't validate his parking unless he was there to conduct some business. The executive proceeded to start the transfer process for several million dollars worth of IBM accounts that he controlled to another bank. He then requested his parking validation.

Its best not to make too many assumptions about your potential customers.
