Is Third-Hand Smoke A Hazard? : NPR

'3rd-hand smoke' poses risk to infants, doctors say

I say enough is enough already. I remember having friends who were so addicted to cigarettes, they would literally beg to smoke in my car like they would die if they did not have one. I remember going to nightclubs and bars and coming home smelling like smoke and being sick from it. I remember my eyes burning. Sorry for the ranting and all, but what are everyone else's opinion on this issue?
Answer is "NO"

* Banning cigarettes in public/closed spaces, has sense as those who do not want to smoke are forced to "smoke." However, warning people that their environment includes smokers might be just enough in many cases.

* However, those that smoke in the privacy of their own home or car--that is up to them. Why remove their freedom?

If people care to shorten their lives but increased what they see as enjoyment, who are we to deny them?

Let's drop all the pretensions toward social engineering, shall we?

S.

Did you read the thread? I DID have a problem that I have since eradicated, and that was 3 years ago. I have not been drinking and driving for over 3 years now. .

Unfortunately, this thread has gotten huge. I agree with what you just said 100%, I have admitted a total ban is wrong. It is somewhere in the middle of this thread.

Fair enough, but I was not picking a fight with him either. He was the one who was rude and disrespectful from the start. I have very good self control, and that is the reason I did not punch him. I do not hit anyone ever, it is just not in my nature. This guy just kept egging me on, and pissing me off and I finally snapped. It was not right as this was really my favorite hangout casino on the strip. However, I did learn my lesson. If a situation like this does happen again, I am cashing out and leaving the table. I was lucky, if it had gotten out of hand I could have been arrested. In fact, security told me if I had thrown the whole drink, glass included, they would have called the police and had me arrested.

AND.......banning cigarettes would do what?? Pot is illegal and people still smoke the stuff so why would they not find a way to buy cigarettes if they were outlawed? I am an ex smoker and do understand how bad it is to try to quit smoking and would never tell anyone they should quit. It took me five times before I "got it". As is our privilige in the United States, we are allowed to do and choose as we please how are lives are lived and if that includes killing ourselves with nicotine then so be it...no one can tell a smoker how to run their lives anymore than they can tell us ex smokers how to live. It is what it is and people will have to quit on their own terms.

By the way.............cigarettes still smell good to me and Pot still stinks like wet dogs...I remember it from back in the day and it always reminded me of a dog who got stuck in the rain. Be glad you aren't coming home smelling like pot.,.how would you explain that one?

See, Kate? He doesn't have a problem now that he's not driving while drinking. He only had a problem with alcohol when he would get behind the wheel. No drunk driving = problem solved!

After careful consideration, I've decided to shift my position. I'm now in favor of banning everything except soylent green.

You honestly have no idea how ridiculous this sounds? Seriously? The guy may have been a jerk - I wasn't there, so I don't know, and I certainly have plenty of reasons to doubt the sincerity of your description of him - but he never touched you. You threw a drink at him. YOU got physical with him, and the only thing you see wrong with what you did is that it got you kicked out of a casino?

Remarkable.
