I'm not sure this has been posted yet. I got word that a Wal-Mart Supercenter is coming to Laurens Road. To be located where the old Sam's building is.
Please, please tell me this is wrong - doesn't the Verdae developer own the old Sam's building?
If this is indeed correct, a Wal-Mart will devalue the entire area.

It's wrong. Here is what is going where the old SAMs Club was:

Walmart relocated from Laurens Road to Woodruff Road miles away in 1998. Both areas now can support Walmart's supercenters now. Laurens Road does not have the room for one.

It is too early to know what the final product of the retail centers will be and what tenants will occupy them.
As for what tenants should not occupy them, I definitely do not want to see payday advance stores, medical and dental chain stores, plasma stores, spas and fly-by-night gyms.

Neither does Woodruff Rd, but there it is.
Walmart on laurens rd used to be down by Petsmart, right? It was Walmart, then when they left for the supercenter on Woodruff, it because a K-Mart.. Now it's.. Carolina Pottery or something along those lines?

Yes, Kmart moved into Walmart's former Laurens Road store and closed in 2004. Old Time Pottery moved in afterward.

I am confused on that. I thought the mayor said it would be a mix of big box and small retailers in the style of Greenridge. Seems like there would be a lot more acreage available behind those smaller strip buidings (that front Laurens Road in the rendering) for larger store development.
You could fit those 2 buildings in now in front of the old Best Buy and Sams.
Razing those two big boxes would give them even more room for larger stores. I am not sure its out of the question that Walmart could become part of that in some way. They have been looking to return to that corridor for some time. I recall reading in one of the business journals several years back they considered converting that Sams to a supercenter when they held it.
I do think adding a Walmart the size of the Pelham Rd store along Laurens or Haywood would help relieve some traffic from folks heading out Woodruff Rd.
