catman, this in in "hobbies and recreation" because there isn't another category on this board to put it in.
Going target shooting can be a hobby or recreational activity for some.
He's kinda right. The topic isn't recreational, its home protection & serious buisness, personally I use guns for all legal purposes. Their pretty versatile. I use them to get untold hours of enjoyment with my family, I use them to get food & if need be I can use them defensively.
that said this is as good a place as any for it.
If the economy keeps going south and people laid off with children to feed then crime will rise. A deacon in a local church robbed a bank due to stress of paying the bills. A gun is the only way to defend your property, the police will respond to clean up the mess after the crime has happened if you are lucky then the police will arrive as the crime is happening either way personel responsiblity is the way to go.
Double action revolver. Get a .357. You can use .38, .38 special or .357 magnum rounds.
Hammerless double action is good too. Easy to operate, almost never jam....leave the hammer down on an empty cylinder...point...pull....No slide to rack...no magazine to slap....can't be forced out of battery....

We are walking a fine line here I guess, but, in order to gain the knowledge required for a personal defense arm, one must do a bit of recreational shooting. Like test driving a car. I still believe that competition of some kind is about the best, cheapest (sorta) and funnest way to train with firearms and learn to operate under pressure. This falls under H&R. Shooting is a sport, or martial art, if you prefer. I still have not found the perfect do everything firearm, but it sure has been a fun search.
46Barb: Target shooting is a hobby for me! I love to go to the rifle range. I was just saying that home protection firearms are a different matter. But your point concerning there being no other forum to put it in is well taken.
Thanks to a lot of the posters in this thread, especially the first 50 of so. There were a lot of informative posts and I learned a lot from them. Too bad some bad seeds had to throw the direction off here and there, but you can't escape them.
Glad I finally found this too. There's usually every topic covered here in CD, but this one was a little harder to find than usual. Thanks again
BTW, I'm thinking of starting with an XDm (haven't decided on .40 or 9mm), then a Mossberg Persuader, and a S&W .38 special to put in my pocket while out and about.
I favor the various guns hidden strategically about the house method. *grin*
