Is Hawai'i the most liberal state? something to think about if you move there (HOA, buy)

Being liberal or progressive is relative. Eighty years ago social security was a radical idea. 10 years ago everyone accepted social security. In the 60s civil rights for minorities were established, in the 70s women's reproductive rights were established. In the 90s no one expressed interest in going backward. Now if you want to save any of the rights you are considered liberal by the tea partiers that want to go back to the 1920s.

So if you have been living in Hawaii the last 10 years, you maybe thinking not much progress is being made, and Hawaii is not very liberal or progressive, but in the US south we are fighting to prevent going backwards. In Virginia the Republican Party had a closed convention to nominate the candidates for governor, lt. Governor and Attorney General to ensure tea party backed candidates won, and held primaries for delegate to ensure tea party challengers would win.

So by standing still, Hawaii is more liberal than southern states which have well financed groups that want to go backwards in time.

No gay marriage and no marijuana dispensaries. The Mormon church is still very powerful in Hawaii.

North Carolina now allows anyone to carry a handgun in restaurants that serve liquor and guns are allowed on all public schools. They also allow companies to frack and not disclose what is in the fracking liquid.

Virginia has a war on women's health and reproductive rights and wants to have an non traditional off year redistricting, the governor accepts 6,000 dollar Rolex watches from businessmen that want to launch products at the governors mansion and several state legislators now favor uranium mining after taking an "educational" trip to France.

Texas is Texas and is immediately implementing laws that were blocked by the voting rights act. The Wisconsin governor broke government employees unions there last year and the list goes on and on. The mainland is caught up in fights with a tea party funded with Koch brothers money. In Hawaii tea is still associated with growing and drinking and not a flight backward.

Fredesch, admittedly both parties haves their issues (problems). Unfortunately here in the islands we have a one party system. I guess you can say it makes for very effective government if the goal is to push through left leaning agendas in the legislature. Not a whole lot of balance but then there's not a whole lot of voter turnout.

Hawaii requires employers to provide health insurance for any employee who works 20 hours or more. That's liberal. That also keeps the unemployment numbers high because it is too expensive to hire full time workers.

Liberals feel the good of society comes ahead of the rights of the individual, and Hawaii has their Ohana culture, which basically says the same thing.

Hawaii is very heavily taxed and not much given back to the taxpayers because welfare costs are so heavy. That's politically liberal.

Things like gay marriage are social tolerance issues, not political issues and are neither conservative nor liberal. Since many conservatives believe the rights of the individual come ahead of the rights of the masses, they are live and let live and they will acknowledge the rights of homosexuals to be married. ls Don't confuse the religious right with conservative. Not the same thing at all. There are both liberals and conservatives that support gay marriage; the issue does not divide along party lines.

Hawaii is also generally very pro-military, given the many military bases in the state. So sometimes political labels aren't all that meaningful.

I thought Civil Unions in Hawaii became legal last year? A friend got married in Maui. Granted I'm not up on current events like I used to be, but my FB newsfee said it was legal.
