Default Poker-Based Definitions of Leveling

The word level (used as a verb) in poker has both an original strategy-based poker definition and a slang one.

The poker definition refers to the different levels of thinking a poker player operates on.

Beginning players (Level 1) only think about what cards they are holding and play accordingly (ABC poker).

Level 2 players think about their own cards as well as what range of cards their opponent is likely holding, and choose betting lines to exploit that extra information.

Level 3 players (if they believe their opponent is a level 2 player) think about what what their opponents perceive their cards to be, and try to exploit that by choosing a betting line designed to provide misinformation.

It can go on ad infinitum (sort of like the scene in the Princess Bride where the hero has to decide which cup has the poison).

But you should only play one level above your competition. If, for instance, you assume that the you are playing a Level 2 player but he is actually Level 1, a fancy play designed to conceal your hand can very often backfire. This is called "outleveling yourself".

The slang definition is derived from that and refers to proposing ridiculous information as truth. If someone reads something absurd and takes it at face value than they have been leveled.

Better repost with the words "in Las Vegas" at the end of the thread title, else the mods will generalize (move) the thread.

You can't edit a thread title huh?

I kept on mentioning that the other thread was getting off topic, but I felt the need to respond to Madman of Bethesda's attacks.

I reposted this because it is good info and there are a lot of poker players on here it seems (and because I spent a decent amount of time writing it).

Which was kind of a waste of time since I responded to vegaslocal's question with a link to UrbanDictionary stating almost the exact same thing before you "spent a decent amount of time writing it."

But, hey, it's your time to waste.

I read the UD definition and didn't think it explained well enough how the two definitions are related - key piece being that by accepting a story (or betting line) at face value you are being out leveled.

BTW, everything I have posted here is true: rental in foreclosure, trying to buy a house, past career as equity trader, working in poker industry, etc.

Stuff that was not true: connections with royalty, fox hunting, thinking I am a big deal.

I think the Ron Burgundy reference may have been lost on some. It got a chuckle out of me.
