I am a professional who lives in West Hempstead... I think that that bad rep that Hempstead has is mainly due to race... I don't know why people has to assume that a place is bad based on race.
A - As already pointed out, you do not appear to live in Hempstead or West Hempstead, so I don't know why you claim to live there now.
B - West Hempstead is COMPLETELY different then Hempstead. That little word "west" crammed in there isn't a minor factor separating the two. Although you may not actually live there, the West Hempstead area has some very affluent areas. It is handled by the Nassau County Police and it does not belong to the Hempstead school district.
West Hempstead and Hempstead are not the same. West Hempstead can be a great place to live. Hempstead is a great place to die.

Just to clarify it.. At the begging, I was not officially living in West Hempstead but when I stated that I actually live there it was because I actually did move in. I you got confused then sorry but yes I do love there now.. And yes I still think that the negative reviews are due to race cuz I have not experienced anything negative.
I also wanted to point out that people do move a lot in NY.
