It's pretty clear Mits just doesn't want to spend the monthly fee so this is a good suggestion other than the fact that it's another device in addition to his phone. My parents have Optimum so I use her login for hotspots and they really are connectable in many places, I'll give them that.
I see Verizon has 250 MB for $15 a month. You can't swing that?
That's $15 per month more than what I'm already paying.

I already have an iPod touch and an iPad (got both as Christmas presents) and use them with WiFi.
I wish the OP luck in the future because when my crappy old phone broke a year or so ago, the Verizon store literally had one regular phone. The guy freely admitted they are phasing them out. I found that highly annoying. I guess you are going to have to go to tracfone in the future if you just want a plain old cell phone. I think this is the reason so many young teenagers have smartphones. I know my kids are in the minority for not having smartphones in their MIDDLE school.
There are 1.5 billion smartphones used worldwide more then pc. They are growing at an alarming rate even in third world countries. I think the real story is the op isn't intelligent enough to know how to use one and that 45 bucks a month is just an excuse

I am certainly intelligent enough to use one. I just don't want to spend the money on a monthly data plan. Why do you have such a problem with that?

He said he has an ipad though so if you have an ipad the iphone is pretty much just a mini version.

Except an iPad doesn't require a data plan. It uses WiFi.

If you wont pay $15/mo though that is pretty sad.
Isn't it $30 per month beyond what I'm already paying?

No. My wife almost never shops and rarely buys clothes or shoes for herself. She and I both live a very frugal lifestyle. That seems to be a foreign concept on this board.
