If you are willing to pay for my data plan, I'll get a smart phone.
You can get a data plan for around $50 if you want.
I didnt say their service was great but Sprint or Tmobile has good prices. Verizon may have the best service but it is also the priciest.
I personally dont care if you get one or not b/c I dont know you, but it seems like you are gung no about it before even shopping around. I like pro & con lists, they help make decisions.
If you continue to go without, well then I hope you are not ever in a life or death situation b/c you will be praying you had one.
I bought my parents one. They are in their 70's and they were like you with their feelings. I downloaded basic apps for them that I thought would help them. They dont use it much but all 3 of us like the piece of mind that it provides.
Something else to think about is that when the power goes out, your computer wont work but your phone will.

But I don't want to switch to a lower quality carrier just to say that I have a smart phone.

Do you pay for their data plan? If not, then it is cruel that you got them a gift that requires them to pay every month.

I'm well aware of that. I just don't want to pay a monthly fee all of the time for something that is only useful during an extended power outage.

Obv i pay for their plan! I'm not a coward to my own parents. They have one phone they share. If they want another my sister will get them that one. It's very affordable every month and they jave the most basic smart phone. They do not have an iphone 5. They jave the 4 and for their purposes it is fine - they do not need top of the line.
People keep abhorring about the data plan and the monthly charges associated with it, but I just realized something...
Most place have wifi, for FREE! The office where I work has free wifi, most place I eat out at have free wifi, Starbucks has, guess what? FREE WIFI! If you are an unfortunate Optimum subscriber, they too offer.. *gasp* free wifi hot-spots dotted all over friggin' Long Island!
You want free wifi in your car? Follow a Hamptons Jitney, their busses have free wifi so you cheap folks can benefit from the information age you're not getting the full benefit of.

Unfortunately, Verizon (and presumably other carriers) won't let you get a smart phone without paying for a data plan.

Pay As You Go carriers will let you do this (Straight Talk, Virgin, Boost, etc.). And, as I've previously mentioned, I know Straight Talk at least runs on the Verizon network - when I switched from Verizon to Straight Talk, I saw absolutely no changes in reception/coverage.
