Lots of lower level positions are exempt and don't really pay a remarkably high salary but you are still expected to work free overtime. It's not that people are happy about it, it's that in most jobs, no one is giving you a choice.

Sure they do. They are free to quit any time and take a paid by the hour job if that's what they so desire.

Well in the world of being a cop or firefighter they have had that choice. That could be a reason many go into this profession for this perk. They don't get a bonus as many corporate workers do, they also often end up working holidays and don't get to be with family.

I agree it is a hard job and probably I cannot do it.
Their pay is not really bad though. The median income of State Troopers is over $120,000. A few make over $300,000.
I assume it is about the same for Boston PD or even higher.

And you are either stupid or intentionally hostile to bring up the target of illusory sweatshop because you are the only one who has mentioned such a thing.

It could be built into the management employees however they are also mostly unionized. It would most likely be considered an unfair labor practice for the line patrol officers and supervisors. Not to mention the recruitment problems and lesser-qualified candidates that would be the result.

Where did this figure come from? This is probably a median with OT included. No trooper makes a salary of 300k base.

What types of lower level jobs are you referring to?

Pick almost any job in a white collar office setting. A lot of companies just classify everyone as exempt from overtime on dubious grounds. And we're talking people making $30k/year or more.
