Age wise the drop was hardest for young women (<20, not a bad thing IMO)
I couldn't find state-level data but considering the racial make-up of MA and the age make up (older than average) I assume we are going to be around the average value.

Thats not as bad as I was thinking it would be when other countries posted a 10-12% drop in births.

4% isnt awful. But hopefully that rebounds in 2022-2023 as we return, somewhat, to normalcy.

I doubt there is going to be much of a rebound. The drop has been going on forever and is not related to covid. I would assume that if there is a rebound in 2022-3 in 2024-5 we are going to be at this level again.

PS do you remember who dropped 10-12%? In Europe I assume.

Going by my own world, we will see an INCREASE in births due to Covid.

I doubt we return to normal-we never did after the Great Recession. Joe Biden's new expanded child tax credit could possibly help.

$3,600 is laughable compared to the annual cost of one young child, and some couples don't even qualify for it, so I guess in that regard it's helping ... keep the birth rate low.

If you view everything from the standpoint of a South End brownstone owner maybe, but $3600/young child is a big deal. HCOL states it ends up quickly vaporizing into a month and a half of daycare but in large portions of the US it is 1/3rd of the annual cost. Being fully refundable makes it available to low wage earners and the people who could use it most.

You don't notice it if equals your yearly Tatte budget, but for many others it will undoubtedly lead to a better outcome in life.

I wouldn't call it laughable, but it's not going to change the mind of someone that is undecided about having a baby.

3600 per kid is impactful for many if not most. Idk about changing decisions but it's definitely impactful.
