I'm not saying there is something wrong with hip hop. It doesn't make you old fashion to listen to rap, rock, mallcore, emo, reaguee, industrial, classical, acid house, eurodance, jazz, blues, etc... But to held an MAINSTREAM event around that genre seems rather outdated and "un-hip" imho - we might as well be living in 1996. The thing with hip hop and rap is that such genres, aesthetically in sound, have remained stagnant. I assume most of the attendees will be people over 30's...?

Well I will stay away from Miami Beach at least south of 41st street. I will say I was shocked last year how concentrated the crowd was. I completely forgot it was memorial day last year and went to the movie theater in Lincoln road. Had no problem parking, movie let out around 12am and no traffic nothing. Watch the news in the morning to learn of the shooting a few blocks away. Maybe a mile or less. Was surprised how just blocks away it seemed like a normal weekend night, actually a quieter than normal night. Everything is really concentrated on Washington, Collins or Ocean drive.

If it is violent again this year there need to do away with it.
How?
Increase parking rates to insane amounts and close off all street parking. Tow every car that isn't supposed to be parked. Enforce alcohol in public like crazy.

Not everyone under 30 listens to EDM religiously or exclusively. I know just as many people 25 and under(even teenagers/high-school kids) who "don't get" or "just can't get into" Dub-step as much as I know people who love it. It just happens to be what's popular. Doesn't make Hip-Hop, Rock, Alt-Rock, eurodance, etc unpopular. Trap-Rap, Snap-rap, Gangster Rap, Dance-Rap are still HUGELY popular in the urban communities among the young, along with "Swag Rap".

All my friends and family who live year round in South Beach go away during this weekend. Too crazy and violent. Now what's funny is during the Winter Music Conference and Ultra they stay and participate. The reason being is there is no violence.

Ergo Urban Beach week = crime and violence
Any other big event = fun for everyone

We need to stop Urban Beach Weekend completely

Random Pixels and Loose Talk: The answer is 'no!'

Quote:
City of Miami Beach officials and police are planning to make Memorial Day weekend 2012 on South Beach as miserable as is humanly possible.

One official spoke with me on the condition I not use his name. "Tell your readers," said the official, "they're better off staying home. But, for those who insist upon coming, Ray Martinez and his boys are going to make this Memorial Day weekend on South Beach a wretched experience. We've got some fun things planned. Fun for us...not so fun for the people coming here. We're taking our city back!"

When I pressed the official for details, he said this before hanging up, "Four words: Dusk to dawn curfews."
Quote:
...Street closures up the ying-yang, strict enforcement of open container laws, zero-tolerance for illegal parking, nightly DUI and "safety" checkpoints near Watson Island on the MacArthur Causeway, possible closure of the MacArthur if traffic becomes unmanageable, "enhanced enforcement of obstruction of traffic" and a "traffic/cruising loop" that's been cleverly devised to "route [non-resident] traffic through and out of the city."
Quote:
And if all that isn't enough to deter you from coming, one high-ranking police official told me, "We're going to set a record this year for the number of arrests we make. We plan to double the amount of arrests we've made over the past 5 years. The ACLU will be filing lawsuits against us for years to come. We don't care!"
Looks like the City of Miami Beach is going the "Fort Lauderdale Spring Break in the 80's" route so people decide to just stop coming.

Aggrocrag, I hope your right. Throughout the year Miami plays host to numerous events. This is by far the most dangerous one of all.....shut this event down Miami!!

They can't technically "shut the event down". It's never been an officially sanctioned event, Miami Beach has no control over whether large groups of people decide to come into town at the same time. What they can do is what they're planning this year - strict open container enforcement, tow away cars for any parking infractions, curfews etc. - i.e. make the weekend a hassle and not fun for the visitors so the word spreads and people stop coming. Let's see if it works.

Hopefully the businesses in South Beach will shut their doors over Memorial Day Weekend.........other cities like Atlanta have gotten rid of these events because of the violence that they bring........
