Back in the 70s my brother and I decided to go to the drive-in with my sister and brother-in-law. We debated about it because storms were predicted that night but we had as much faith in the weatherman back then as we do today, plus my brother was a movie addict and according to him, " The show must go on." We got thru the first movie ok, just a little wind and some thunder in the distance. Things didn't start getting rough until 10 minutes into the second movie. It got real windy and dust was swirling all around and gravel began pinging off the cars, sounded like we were in a hail storm. The guy next to us had his car radio on and told us there were tornado warnings and he drove off. The screen went black and I saw the projectionist racing from the projection booth and heading for the concession stand building which was already swarming with people seeking safety. My brother-in-law said, " We're getting the hell out of here " but by that time the wind was roaring and the rain was coming down hard and fast in a circular motion. The first cars trying to leave out the gate came to a complete stop because visibility was zero and that created a log jam of cars, some were hitting each other. Everyone sat there motionless for 10 minutes and then we were able to drive home. No tornadoes touched down where we were but I think one did damage 20 miles away. If I ever get in a situation like that again I will not attempt to drive when I cannot see, I will just roll up the windows, fasten the seatbelt as tight as I can and just sit there and prepare myself for the ride of my life. I thought about that night this morning and did a little research on the internet to see if any tornadoes ever hit a drive-in, I found one that hit just across the river in Belleville. I don't know if any people were there when it hit but you can see the damage it did to the screen.
