You all wish you had the career Tom Cruise has. The guy has been great in many movies. He has that certain something that not all movie stars has, which sets him apart. Who cares that he jumped on a couch for confessing his love to Kate. Ya, I'll admit a little weird but not that big of a deal. Haven't we all acted somewhat a fool in love before. I know I surely have. The media types blew it totally out of proportion, because they get off believing they can ruin someones career by the power that they possess by being in the media. Guess what in his case they can't. We have to stop giving so much damn power to these photog media pariah who are nobodys themselves and get off on trying to ruin somebody who has worked hard to get where there at. Why don't they get a real job and we can scrutinize them for what they do. Tom will be back better than ever in a year or so. You all seem so media led. I mean come on people, learn to think for yourself. You seem like a pack of moo moo's, (thats cows for anyone not getting the pun).. The bottom line is the guy can just flat out act and he has picked many great movie roles over the years. I would kill to have been able to have a career like him.
And by the way,who ever said that you have to be the coolest guy to be in the movies. Some of the greatest actors in the last 100 years have been the oddest, most accentric, "weird", self destructing people we have seen, but that has nothing to do with what they bring to the big screen, as well as the talent they possess.
i kinda agree with the critics here. i like the subject matter, but just based on the trailer that i've seen, yeah, it looks like Tom Cruise is playing Tom Cruise.
"operation Valkyre is in effect"
//My husband's favorite bit in Risky Business is when things are looking grim, and Cruise, who aspires to attend Princeton, announces "Looks like it's University of Illinois!" (Yes, my spouse is an Illini.)//
That was one of my faves too! Just the way he put on his shades, lit up a smoke and delivered the line (plus the ""sometimes you've just got to say, WTF") to the college recruiter guy (who later leaves with one of the call girls.) And of course, later in the film when his dad reports that the recruiter told him, "Princeton needs a man like Joel whatever-his-last-name-was!"
I'm not a huge Cruise fan either, but I agree RB and Born on the Fourth of July and Rain Man (loved the scene where the two now-Sharp Dressed Men were riding down the casino escalator to a sexy song) were among his best films. I haven't seen Collateral and don't remember what it was about...worth renting?
Of the 17 Tom Cruise movies I have seen (all 3 Mission Impossibles, All The Right Moves, War of the Worlds, Minority Report, Eyes Wide Shut, Jerry McGuire, Interview With The Vampire, The Firm, Rain Man, A Few Good Men, Collateral, Cocktail, Top Gun, Risky Business, The Outsiders) I only didn't like two: Mission Impossible 2 and Minority Report (boring). I wouldn't have liked those two movies no matter who was in them.
Collateral is my favorite Tom Cruise movie followed by The Firm, Rain Man and All The Right Moves. All were highly entertaining.
I hope to see Magnolia some day. I just never seem to catch it on TV from the beginning so I haven't watched it.
Point is, with the exception of 2, I am entertained by the Tom Cruise movies I have seen and I would never not see a movie because he's in it. Valkyrie (as a movie topic) interests me and I may see it in the theater.
What he does in his private life is his business. However, I appreciate that he keeps his yapper shut on politics, publicly. It makes me like him more.

Definitely.
IMHO it is a very worthwhile film, good acting all around, not just Cruise.
I agree with SlickRick that Cruise *does* have that certain something, he is a movie star, but sometimes this works against him.
I agree with Domergurl that Val Kilmer, a fine actor, probably would have been a better choice for Von Stauffenberg.

If Tom wouldn't present himself as a self absorbed WEIRDO, then he wouldn't be getting blasted.
If only he hadn't made a JA of himself on Oprah
If only he hadn't told Matt Lauer that he was being glib, when in fact, it was Tom Cruise who was being glib
If only he hadn't fired his management team to hire his equally kooky sister, only to fire her a couple months later and hire back "non-Thetans".
Tom has been on damage control for almost 3 years and people aren't buying it. He hasn't had a successful film that he's carried in YEARS. Heck, his performance in Tropic Thunder wasn't even promoted ... hmmmm wonder why. Tom Cruise is box office poison now and it's of his own making. Heck, his wife doesn't have a career anymore other than being the next Victoria Beckham.
Anybody plan on seeing this? This review is harsh ~ has Tom lost his appeal?
"Cruise wears an eye patch and a Nazi uniform, but speaks with the same flat, unaffected American accent that places him somewhere between Redondo Beach and Johnny Rockets. It’s absolutely hysterical to hear and see a boyish Nazi with blazing white perfect teeth and that voice announce, “We must kill Hitler.”
The accent is only part of the problem, but it’s a big part. Cruise apparently didn’t even try for a German sound to play Colonel Claus von Stauffenberg. It’s as if Meryl Streep wandered into “Sophie’s Choice” sounding like a Valley Girl.
If this was the way he thought he’d get to the hearts and minds of Germans, maybe he should get some new marketing advice. When the fans in that country see this, even Brunhilde won’t be able to help him!
Tom Cruise is the most limited actor of his time. How he has gotten as far as he has, is to me, one of life's great mysteries.
I couldn't help but notice his standard "menace" pose where he looks down and stares out the top of his eyes. Pretty hackneyed - it hasn't been effective since "Interview with a Vampire" The only movie I have ever even remotely liked him in was Minority Report and even so, he did a P*ss poor job of that and probably almost ANY other actor would have been better. It was only my love for Max Von Sydow that kept me from walking out of the theatre on that one.
Anyway, Valkyrie will evaporate into the nothingness. Nobody much cares about Adolph these days anyway. It's a different world, a different generation. Life goes on.
I'm seeing previews for a movie called Definance that is coming out on January 19th starring Daniel Craig ... HE would have made a better Von Stauffenberg.
