I don't usually describe movies this way, but after it was over, I felt "warm" and "full" somehow, like watching it had actually enriched me in some way. It felt pretty laid-back, but I loved listening to the characters' conversations, and there were some very interesting characters (and good actors). It was filmed in 16mm and even though it isn't set in the '70s, it kind of felt like it was. Great soundtrack, too. 5/5 stars.
The Frozen Ground (2013)
This one was pretty typical (based on a true story about a serial killer in Alaska, Robert Hansen), but I thought it was well-made. Nicolas Cage was very good as a state trooper investigating the case(s), and I think I'm all good for a while seeing John Cusack as a creep. He does it too well, although I've seen him much worse than in this one.
It was just interesting comparing how the two movies made me feel. The first one gave me a warm fuzzy and left me feeling happy about humanity; the second one... ugh, just the opposite. The seediness felt grim.
I am not that crazy about movies that take a Blair Witch type approach to the photography. This one left me with a lot of "why am I watching this?" (I have to other wise, it will sit in the library and I will always wonder about it)....but, it grows on you, generating a little motivation to watch it through. It did have a happy ending.......of a sort. Say a 3.4.
The Jazz Loft According to W. Eugene Smith (2015) on Amazon Prime. Watched it for the jazz and it did not disappoint ( :14 segment with Thelonious Monk practicing / playing in Smith's loft ). A prolific Life magazine photographer ( one of his pics ). Wounded while standing, taking a pic as a Japanese motor round explodes taking out his upper jaw and embedding shrapnel in his spine. Fascinating documentary. 9/10
COLD SKIN,2017 Spanish and FRENCH Production based on a novel of the same name.
A young IRISHman went to an island to be a weather watchman, the only person on the island is the light tower man,who spent days drinking and smoking and carousing with a female human amphibian .
At night they have to fend off attacks from many amphibians they called frogs, they are like human who came out of the sea with webbed feet, sharp claws.
The young Irishman found a boat which belonged to a Portuguese ship carrying dynamite which sank into the ocean floor.
The two decided they could use the dynamite and kill all these frogs and it worked.
kind of a bizarre ending, watch it.
It is a nice thriller when it comes to our world, so sophisticated, can be made to try to kill us. Unlike The Net, however, it is just one man, not a shadow government. Otherwise, can't say too much about it without giving away spoilers. Say a 6.6.
A good, colorful 60s made epic movie.....only perhaps too long and while the scenes were great.....where were we going? Say a 6.8 because in the end, there really wasn't a feel good feeling for what should have been a great movie.
I thought this was an interesting movie. Dramedy. Had an excellent soundtrack. The storyline is set in NYC over the course of one day. I could very easily watch this again. Leaves you wanting more.
