Sorry, I couldn't resist posting. I live in the heart of Vanderbilt University, and there are like 2 non-chain "trendy cafes." Having moved here straight from Manhattan, I can't even bring myself to eat at the NY Deli you reference. It's been over 12 years since I left NJ but my parents have relocated back to NJ recently. Stuff I crave in Nashville that I eat when I visit NJ includes thin crust pizza, good Thai, good Mediterranean/Greek, Indian take out. I drive 11 miles to the only Dunkin Donuts in this area when I really crave the coffee, although Krispy Kremes can be found much closer and is an ok subsitute.
I do a lot of lunch ordering for my group and I wish I could order the sandwiches like the pictures posted. We have to make do with the menu from Panera or the few chichi local sandwich places which are the same aforementioned "trendy cafes."
Nashville has fulfilled me with easy access to small and large chain restaurants galore that were largely absent in NYC (in the Vandy/downtown area and also in Cool Springs/Brentwood). I am not impressed by the strip mall local eateries or any of the local ethnic food places I have tried here. There are a handful of unique restaurants that I have enjoyed. But I would still give props to North Jersey having waaaay more diversity and selection in every type of food you could find since the population is so much more diverse, duh. Factor in the proximity to NYC and Nashville doesn't even compare so let's not.
Edit: Oh yeah, and the food is one of the reasons that I will move back to NJ.
If you don't like it leave. Or is it you can't afford to live in NJ? I can but chose not to.You love it so go home.Nashville is my home now, NJ was just a stopping place on the way south.
They are building 100 dunkin donut chains in Nashville. I believe 2 more just opened up. I have one near me on Crother's Pky and I never went in, Why? I don't care for their coffee. I prefer Krispy Cremes.
I've gone to some good ethnic restaurants in Hillsboro Village, West End

LOL. "Good" is obviously a very subjective term. For example, I have tried every Indian restaurant in Hillsboro Village/West End (5) and am left to pick the best of mediocre if it's what I'm craving. Why is it automatically assumed that if one moves south, it's a question of affordability of the North vs the South? I relocated for a contract with Vanderbilt because it is easy to explore different parts of the country when you are young and single with no family in tow. Nashville has been nice for the past 1.5 years, but in another year when my contract ends, it won't be for me long term.

I won't eat Indian food anywhere, so I wouldn't know how its made here. First and only time I tasted it was in a Top restaurant in NYC. It was awful, and theirs was supposed to be the best.I have had great Vietnanese food here, and that's because a great deal of the oriental population here is from there, except for the occassional Princeton graduates I have run in , in cool springs.
I thought your parents used to live here, Now you say you relocated? I have an excellent memory.

I said that because you said you loved NJ , and if you love it so much, Why stay here?

Does anybody else find this funny coming from this person ?
Haven't we all asked at one point or another the following question
If you hate NJ so much and have already moved ,why would you want to keep coming back to the jersey board and not post on your own beloved States board???
here's another food that I would so desperately miss if I were to leave NJ (Northeast, actually):
Lord have mercy - trans fat never tasted so good.
We were able to get a limited selection of Drake's cakes in NV and also here in FL. The coffee cakes are still good, but the Devil Dogs don't taste the same. Are they still good when you get 'em up there?

We have those!
