Honestly, I think Newark does not have such reputation by accident. Compared to any city in Montana, I'm sure there is a drastic difference in safety-crime levels that can inflict fear to any person. I work in downtown Newark. I approached the city with an open mind. However, I needed to be robbed at gun point three times in order to change my opinion, and the way I felt about the city of Newark. Almost every major corporation in Newark has shuttle busses that picks up employees at the main door of Newark Penn Station once you get off the NJT trains. When I first started to work in Newark, I thought it was amuzing to see so many shuttle busses parked on front of Newark Penn Station. Later on, I was told that most companies hire these private operators to guarantee the safety of their employees. Mind you, Newark has enough public busses, subways, and trolley trains. The building where I work, 33 Washington St, has a cafateria in the lobby that has been robbed 13 times since I started to work for this company. Even the building's security guards were robbed inside the building. In addition, the Hondurian gang M13 has moved their headquaters to Newark making the city even more scary. Finally, after seven years working in this city, the company I work for has decided not to renovate their lease and move out of Newark. During the day, there's a certain degree of false safety, but when the sun comes down it becomes really dangerous.
That's quite a story and I'm not even surprised. Ur company is making a smart move if they want to keep long-term employees. Security Gaurds should be armed and well trained, not so at ease laughing talking to everyone.
I was making a mere reference of Newark's reputation, and as the person above mentioned; the person coming from out of state does not know anything about the city.
I came from south jersey and knew just as much about this city. It's complimenting to see out of state people coming here for school or to live, make sure u observe if the school is worth it the university experience u want, it's a big spread out university a bit impersonal but also reputable diverse etc, rather than that it's like anywhere else.
What does that matter. The airport itself is not in Newark.

If they actually had lived in NJ for any length of time and used the airport even once- they would know that there would be no need to venture into Newark itself.

it depends from where u are coming, If u live north or east of the Airport u may very well go through newark streets to get their. not to mention tons of people have gotten lost coming or going to the airport. I been there several times to pick people up and still get lost if i don't have directions planned in advance

This person is clearly flying- if you take this literally. They are NOT driving at all. They are not going to be circling the area in a car.
Small gangs of marauding, big, scary black men greet each & every passenger arriving at Newark airport with a complementary stabbing.

note to girl from Montana.... i know you guys are pretty sheltered up there.. But.. there is REALLY no reason to be scared.. you can catch a train from the AIRPORT straight to Rutgers... and maybe a cab from there.. just listen to your ipod dont look at anyone funny.. on they east coast people dont say hi to each other.... so dont do that! lol seriously
Basicly just keep to yourself and SERIOUSLY nothing is going to happen to you.. IF YOU LOOK VULNERABLE.... the people that YOU are scared of WILL notice.. Hopefully when you start at rutgers you will make some friends (ALOT of jersey kids go there!) what will assure you that its ok to walk the streets , and that Jersey has a TON of nice people from all different walks of life.
