Over the last few decades I've put down a few hundred thousand miles traveling in New Mexico. I've spent the night in a lot of towns, from Farmington to Jal, from Lordsburg to Clayton. There are still a few areas I want to spend time in, amongst them Silver City and Carrizozo. I've been through those towns but never spent the night there. As close as I've come is spending two nights at the Inn Of The Mountain Gods in Ruidoso. I saw the Raton, New Mexico 50's and 60's rock group the Fireballs while I stayed there, I personally know one of the members (George Tomsco.) I'm planning a trip to Austin, Texas next April and I'd like to take my time going there while I spend a few days in New Mexico.
Joqua, do you have some recommendations for food and lodging in Carrizozo? The last time I was through there was in 2006.

I was so ticked off. I finally get to Carrizozo just at the right time for lunch, and didn't realize that the Outpost had gone out of business.
There looks ta be a lot of historical posting activity above in old threads in which a Carrizozo enthusiast ought ta have a heyday of information to peruse. I will keep this thread in mind as a good reference on the area. It interests me only in part because of it's relatively close proximity to places like the Trinity site, Ruidoso, Capitan, Lincoln County sites involving Billy the Kid, and so on.
I will continue to appreciate any and all information anyone has to share about this small town in New Mexico.
GregW - are you still on your way to New Mexico or have you abandoned those plans?
Thank you. I obviously didn't do a very good search. Reading back through those older threads, I don't detect a lot that has changed since the posts dating from about 2008.
There are small towns in New Mexico that I like, and those that I don't. Especially in the southeast part of the state. Carrizozo is one that I like. I passed through several times when I was in my malpais exploration phase and headed down to the Carrizozo malpais.
Anyway, I like the architecture and the people I met there. It was much more familiar as New Mexico to me than many places in the region. I hope Carrizozo can continue to grow as a vibrant place whether through art or industy(ranching/ag) rather than becoming a retirement community of subdivisions and trailers, or even just dry up and blow away.
Unfortunately, to see it survive as an arts community, it needs some sort of continuing community like a school, colony, or summercamp. Investment, in other words.
elkotronics et al - I am still somewhat obsessed with New Mexico but as my wife has been elected to a position as an election official we cannot move completely for another few years. However we are seriously planning a visit late in November to mid December (after Thanksgiving and before Christmas) to take advantage of any airline price breaks. Current plans are for a few days in ABU visiting museums, the tram, etc. followed by driving down the valley to T or C, Hatch and possibly Alamogordo and, if I can confirm that Dr. Goddard's museum is still there, Roswell.
Thanks for the response, GregW. I go to Gerald Champion today for an Ebola informational meeting. Training sessions for those who are in contact with patients normally while they're working will come eventually.
Have a fun trip over to NM when you do come out, GregW!
