I assure you there are no verticle ID's issued in any state in the US.
And I can assure you that if you'll do a simple GOOGLE search on the term; "vertical driver license" you'll learn otherwise. Quite a few states, if not all of them, issue a vertical format to those under 21 years of age.

On Topic: I just want to remind everyone that the businesses that enact such drastic age verification measures would prefer not to, but the risk of have liberal policies on handling alcohol sales can have ramifications leading up to $250,000 dollars or more in fines and the revocation of liquor licence.
Most businesses cannot absorb such excessive fines. Would you risk your your livelihood and go into a quarter-million dollars debt because you don't want to offend some greybeard who doesn't have the good sense to carry his driver's license?
I was carded in Scarpas on Academy in ABQ last night. The waitress told me it was NM law. I have lived in Santa Fe for 18+ months and never been carded. Some friends joined us about 30 minutes later, ordered wine and were not carded by the same waitress. I am 71. Everybody else in our foursome is 60+. I have white hair as does the other guy. The ladies...well...the would have white hair. :-)
I understand most of the reasons they do this but I do not see how this nuisance to people who are clearly of age addresses the problems of DUI, teenage drinking etc. If someone looks young by any reasonable signs then get ID. If someone drinks and drives then enforce the NM laws against that and get them off the road. Let the rest of us enjoy a night out with this stupid and misinformed hassle.
PS. Refusing a driving license or passport that clearly shows birthday just because that document may have expired is overstepping the authority a shop clerk. Who do they think they are, the FBI?

State law states that expired ID are not to be accepted. It is somewhere in this thread, just read each post if you care to...

Wow!I have never been carded because someone standing next to me did not look 21.Just bought wine at Walmart the other day with 20 year old grandson and was not carded.Hmmm,maybe they thought he was old enough,but he still looks like a baby to me.
I live in SW Washington. The local stores ask for ID from anyone who wishes to purchase alcohol. One store manager said that if they ask everyone for valid ID they won't be accused of discrimination. It made sense to me. That store, also, will not sell to someone that is obviously already intoxicated. Which, IMO, is VERY good.
