The metropolitan area, today, has approximately 1.28 million residents. We are on track to surpass the highest number of recorded residents of around 1.35 million in 20 to 30 months. It is at that point the area will be in new territory of record population for the Metro area moving beyond. We rarely hear about recovery, but, it's still happening, obviously, and that is one quick glance. Sources used: BGR, WDSU, GNOCDC.

Major changes in New Orleans economic development abilities

NEW ORLEANS -- One month ago, General Electric announced it would locate its information technology office in New Orleans, with 300-high paying jobs. Area leaders were ecstatic to be chosen over many other cities.
"The GE announcement I think will prove to be a watershed moment in the economic history of this city," said Michael Hecht.
"For decades we undersold ourselves," Hecht said. "For decades we talked about ourselves as really being just four blocks of Bourbon Street, instead of one of the best places in the country to run a business and have a family, and raise a family."

Billionaire Investor Jim Coulter on Why New Orleans is One of the Best Cities for Entrepreneurs - Forbes

SouthernBelleinUtah-is there a way to update (and bump) the thread without often double posting?

Interesting article. I hope Coulter is correct. New Orleans is a special place with a unique feel and I would like to see the economy there continue to grow.

It sometimes seems that the city is too dependant on tourism/hospitality, so it would be great if the education technology or medical industries that he mentions can be more successful in the city.

There is still one thing to consider with the new developments: Geography, mainly the geography of New Orleans. I'm looking at this from geographer's perspective. The city needs to be developed with the geography of New Orleans in mind. It sounds cliche, and I may have mentioned this before, but I would look to Amsterdam for guidance. Why? New Orleans and Amsterdam have their boggy, sub-maritime geography in common.

I think there is a unique aura in the city too, something unique among business owners as well.
Education in general would be a major boost, there are plenty universities within city limits for the city to benefit more from.

Amsterdamn is probably one of the most similar cities in the world to NO, but what would change by taking geography into account?

Look at what Amsterdam is did to become the city it is. I think of the Delta project. I look at what they have done with the canals. I look at the bicycle lanes. There is alot to learn from Amsterdam.

I don't see that same scale of investment happening in Louisiana with our current government and economic status. I fully believe New Orleans is ready but the state is holding it back in that regard.
