Demolition of Claiborne Avenue elevated expressway to be discussed
Transportation expert Jeffrey Tumlin will lead a discussion this evening at Tulane University on "Reimagining Claiborne Avenue." The event is free and open to the public.
The program will begin with a 6 p.m. reception, followed by a 6:30 p.m. lecture and discussion, in Thomson Hall on the second floor of Richardson Memorial Hall, home of the Tulane School of Architecture.
Also speaking will be Vaughn Fauria, president of NewCorp Business Assistance Center and co-director of the Claiborne Corridor Improvement Coalition, and Jacky Grimshaw of the Center for Neighborhood Technology.

NEW ORLEANS -- One month ago, General Electric announced it would locate its information technology office in New Orleans, with 300-high paying jobs. Area leaders were ecstatic to be chosen over many other cities.
"The GE announcement I think will prove to be a watershed moment in the economic history of this city," said Michael Hecht.
"For decades we undersold ourselves," Hecht said. "For decades we talked about ourselves as really being just four blocks of Bourbon Street, instead of one of the best places in the country to run a business and have a family, and raise a family."

It sometimes seems that the city is too dependant on tourism/hospitality, so it would be great if the education technology or medical industries that he mentions can be more successful in the city.

There is still one thing to consider with the new developments: Geography, mainly the geography of New Orleans. I'm looking at this from geographer's perspective. The city needs to be developed with the geography of New Orleans in mind. It sounds cliche, and I may have mentioned this before, but I would look to Amsterdam for guidance. Why? New Orleans and Amsterdam have their boggy, sub-maritime geography in common.

I think there is a unique aura in the city too, something unique among business owners as well.
Education in general would be a major boost, there are plenty universities within city limits for the city to benefit more from.

Amsterdamn is probably one of the most similar cities in the world to NO, but what would change by taking geography into account?

Look at what Amsterdam is did to become the city it is. I think of the Delta project. I look at what they have done with the canals. I look at the bicycle lanes. There is alot to learn from Amsterdam.

I don't see that same scale of investment happening in Louisiana with our current government and economic status. I fully believe New Orleans is ready but the state is holding it back in that regard.
