When I can get it for a good price I buy salmon and swordfish and grill them (usually once a month for salmon, once every other month for swordfish--not really good to have that too often anyhow.) I use tilapia for fish tacos once or twice a month. When I can get it for a good price, I buy uncooked, unpeeled shrimp and make ceviche or put it in a light wine sauce over pasta.

Cool. I'm not knocking it but u cook an awful lot. With my wife preparing to go back to work and becoming a dual income family again I doubt the both of us would have time to cook a lot during the week anymore. We do go in for Sunday dinner tho, thats where Western Beef comes in good. We buy all our meats and poultry there.

if you visit the frugal living forum on city data there are people with money eating like paupers.

it is easy to come up with a diet like that for a week or two but long term that to me would be just awful over and over even if it has a little variation.

the cost of time to do everything yourself is another factor. i also don't see prices anywhere near those local to us.

after the gym i can eat 3000 to 4000 calories and still be looking to snack.

my motto is soup and salad are not food, they go with food.
I wasn't even factoring how many I can eat after I go swimming at the gym. Yes, its more. And yes, on busy days you won't always have the time to cook. Its been the holidays, where I've been relaxing at home and cooking more (and not swimming as much). But all this will change in the New Year, when I have more things to do outside.

remember the days you could buy half a cow from those places in the back of the tv guide.

they would rent you a freezer and give you these insane deals on huge amounts of beef.

Oatmeal alone for breakfast isn't enough for me. If I had hot cereal for breafast, it would have to be accompanied by a boiled egg, maybe sausage, maybe a smoothie, it depends.

Some of your dinners you say is meant for three adults I easily eat that much myself.

I spend about $300 a month on groceries for myself. Depending what I have to do around town, sometimes I eat lunch or dinner outside the home, so that's more money to my food budget.

If I had a family, there's no way we'd have a healthy diet on $200 a month.

Also, all that processed grain products (none of it sounds like its whole grain, particularly if you're buying it on sale) won't add much fiber to your diet. Thing digestion problems, lol.

Living like a pauper (a person who is so poor they may as well apply for food stamps) does not make you a hero. It makes you miserable, poorly fed, and poorly maintained.

Trying to force yourself to live off $3 meals? How tacky and low class!

You must be doing pretty badly in life yourself if you're trying to live off so little..
My husband and son are both 6'. Neither is anorexic, nor am I.

You do not need as much food as you eat.

You could spend a lot less, you choose not to. Do you pay attention to sales or just buy what appeals at the moment?

I'm not advocating feeding a family on $200/month, but saying a person could easily maintain a healthy diet on that.

I use whole grains plenty. Oatmeal is one. I make my breads, pita chips, and some homemade pastas with whole wheat. Yes, there is some processed flour, but it's not that much. I also use brown rice. I make beans and rice with tacos. We get plenty of fiber, lean protein, fresh fruits and vegetables.

I'm not "trying" to live off of $3 meals, I'm able to and still enjoy what I eat. Big difference. Tacky and low-class? Hardly.

I've got a net worth of well over two million dollars. I didn't get that way by being a spendthrift. I don't live like a pauper, but I also don't live like a gluton.

It's easy and takes very little time once you get the hang of it. Best investments are a crock pot, food processor, and bread machine. They cut the work by 75%.

You have the time, you just don't choose to make it. Instead you spend a ton of money on take out and prepared foods--most of which aren't terribly healthy for you.

our overall food bills can hit 1k a month with eating out . we are always on the go on the weekends and out doing our photography. we eat lunch and dinner on the weekends usually out . we are a a family of 3 grown kids with 3- spouses and 1 grandchild.

we usually see at least 1 set every other week and end up taking them out for lunch or dinner.

we had all the kids here 2 weeks ago and ended up bringing in food locally , that was over 225.00 bucks all by itself.

You still can buy a half side of beef in many parts of the country. I have friends with a larger family that do it twice a year. I don't because we don't care for a lot of cuts of beef and wouldn't use that much in a year.

most don't use that much beef anymore... now it has to be cruelty free beef. i think they take the cow to disneyland first and put him on all the rides. then they whack em on the way to the airport.
