I've recently had family from Florida visiting and they never have seen the cost of basic goods (groceries and baby products) so cheap.

Not as old as sitting on your couch all day or having a much smaller street grid to explore.

some people can't make money anywhere else either, so they sacrifice by
moving to ny to make a buck around millions of other people who are also
trying to make ends meet.

You have an odd version of history in your head, seems like you're just guessing. The industrial revolution started in England. Commerical revolutions also happened, with the various companies (like the ghastly notion of taking a whole country and making it a company..... done many times), the stock market and shares basically started in the coffee houses of London. The London square mile was there long before Wall st. became the financial center. Immigrants from the British Isles to America back were largely Irish and Scottish in the 19th Century, not English (not suprising considering that then Britain, which at the time was the most powerful country in the world, was largely dominated by England as it still is).

I think NYC was different because it did it the big city game so much better. I also think that narcissists need where they live to be the best, the ultimate and the original, bar none...

That European or Hawaiian vacation is much more affordable for a middle class family making 120k than the one making 60k, no matter where they are located.

it matters cuz 120k in nyc is like 60k in many other cities
so a family in a cheaper city is obviously better off with 120k than a family with 120k here

That vacation knocks out a much larger chunk off your salary if you make less money. Unless Expedia knows to charge higher fares to NYers.
