The point is that it's like comparing apples to oranges. You can get away without having a car here due to the mass transit system, even if you were to travel into some of the surrounding NYC suburbs. In other major cities, not having a car would severely limit your mobility.

If you can afford to pay tolls and garage parking in Manhattan, more power to you.

u telling me 100-120k is not middle class? what is it then, rich, upper middle? if u compare to the rest of the country NORMAL living conditions, u have to make at least that to have that, if u live in an old sh1thole that always needs maintenance, no car, no parking, no washer/dryer, thats not comparable living
You can get a decent apartment for less than $1800 per month. My point was that there are many people who make far less than 120k and they're doing just fine. Considering the average h/h income in NYC is far less than the figure you quoted, does that mean just about everyone is just sitting around in their s-hole apartment doing nothing?

thats true, but ability to have a car is still a plus, even in nyc it can be inconvenient to not have one

in NYC you are forced to have human contact with all walks of life from the bum to the billionaire

If you prefer living in your 4000 sq ft home and your car, then yes NYC is not for you

aaron--people know what they make and how it compares to others. most people are going to keep that under wraps and not be open about it. when you ask somebody who doesn't make that much a third person question like why does average person still choose to live here it feels like its being aimed at them. most people who are struggling with salary issues even if they are comfortable don't want to be reminded in any way of the fact that they don't make that much $$. maybe when youre younger one doesn't care as much but as you get older and youve been thru the mill and grind such a question can be like striking a match to a matchbox
