If you can afford it, Fort Greene/Clinton Hill and Prospect Heights are good picks, though the white population has increased a lot within the last decade, there's still significant black population in both. Both are relatively safe, for the most part.
Can you be more specifc in what kind of neighborhood you're looking for? There's different kinds of black neighborhoods in BK.
Yes, Ft. Greene, Clinton Hill, Prospect Heights are all strong middle-class neighborhoods with, as has been said a large number of whites. You can also conider the Suyvesant Heights neighborhood of Bed-Stuy and Prospect-Lefferts Gardens, both of which are historic districts. The latter IIRC has a noticeable West Indian presence.
It doesnt have to be a crime riddled place, I am from rhode island and the new york lifestyle has appealed to me, I would not be able to afford something expensive. I've been to brownsville before but that is it. Could even be carribean community i am jamaican. can someone help with the demographics i believe this is the word.
Flatbush would be perfect for you. There is a large Caribbean community there. Take the number 2 train to Flatbush and check it out.
