There are vast numbers of people who consider NYC style urban life absolute hell, and will do anything they have to in orderived to avoid it. Obviously I don't, since I live here. But it's an acquired taste, and it helps a lot if you don't have kids.

The "bennies" are also better in PA. Why live in squalid Section 8 housing here if you can qualify for a Section 8 townhouse in Bethlehem or Harrisburg? PA isn't only for NYers buying in the Pocanos.
I see it the other way around. They're sacrificing to give their families a better way of life.
A better life?? They are commuting 2 to 3 hours in the AM and again in the PM. Once they arrive home they are burnt out. The weekend comes and then they have errands to run, house chores, soccer practice, etc. A person can get old quick with that lifestyle. You also run the risk of burnout. No bueno, dude!

Tiddays all day everyday!!!
Getting burned out is not uncommon among people who work in NYC. Even the ones who live closer.
Yep, the delightful daily commute will be from MARS.
The reason that NYC is so crowded and expensive is that people have decided EN MASSE that a long commute SUCKS...and all the king's horsemen and all the Times realtors cannot put people into the suburbs again.
Largely missing from this thread but mentioned several times in the NYT piece is that many workers these days can and do work from home several days per week.
Technology is changing how people "work" and given the spread of things such as high speed internet connections and home/mobile devices does give options.
