People are leaving not because of riots, that was just icing on the cake. People are leaving because they no longer have to work in NYC physically. My company already declared remote working full time and already removing equipment and cleaning up some office floor space. It's possible to have empty new office buildings in NYC the next few years. I know Facebook and Amazon all bought those new offices but it's not looking like they will be in use anytime soon. When people don't need to work in NYC they don't need to live here. The good thing will be those new transplants moving here will have a much easier time finding a place to live and easier commute.
This is also true of Chicago my home town
When the sheep run the wolves call it discrimination
Mayor light foot is pleading with corporations not to leave
Of course with no protection -Chicago’s favorite product -who can stay ?
I wonder if New York has this problem

we're closing our office too, undecided if we'll re-open in Manhattan after COVID blows over everything is up in the air
Everyone has been working from home or client locations in the tri-state area without a hitch, we are busier than before all this
Manhattan’s empty apartments: New leases plunge 62% in May
Manhattan had its worst May in a decade for new rental leases, as residents leave the city and the real estate industry remains on lockdown, according to a new report.
New leases fell 62% last month, according to a report from Miller Samuel and Douglas Elliman.
May also saw the largest year-over-year increase in new listings in nearly four years, with the number apartments listed for rent in Manhattan jumping 34%, to 7,420. There were more empty apartments on the market last month than at any time since real estate appraiser Miller Samuel started collecting the data in 2006.
This suggests that the shutdown of the real estate market, coupled with New Yorkers fleeing the city, is putting growing pressure on landlords and prices. And there are signs that June won’t be much better. According to real estate service provider UrbanDigs, there were only 377 new leases signed in New York City in the first week of June — down 67% from a year ago.
Love how the news tries to guilt trip people for leaving the city, saying they are "abandoning new york" and "hurting small businesses" people have a right to live wherever they want, and maybe if they didn't make the jobs so low paying and the apartments $5,000/month or put $16 tolls on your daily commute, people would be able to afford to live here, and that does nothing about the horrible quality of life..traffic, noise, rude people, 30 shootings a day, the mayor..etc, the last stat I heard on the radio was that 60% can't afford to live here, despite 80% of the united states population being satisfied with their financial situation. Graffiti-filled gang infested dumps are not "communities". No one is in it together, no new yorker cares about another new yorker LMAO. Long Island sucks too, unless you are up in the Catskills it is not worth living in this state.
